Osteoarthritis is one of the many types of arthritis that causes degeneration of the joints significantly affecting a person’s quality of life.  It is oftentimes characterized by joint stiffness, swelling in the affected area and pain.   The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases said that osteoarthritis is perhaps one of the most frequently-occurring forms of arthritis – the others being rheumatoid arthritis and gout – that affects approximately 27 million people, aged 25 or more, in the United States alone.

What is Osteoarthritis?

For many years, medical experts have devoted time, effort and money in order to determine the exact cause of osteoarthritis.  Sadly, the answers remain elusive. The damage in osteoarthritis starts at the cartilage – a tough connective tissue that is found in between joints as well as in other areas of the body such as the larynx and the outer ear – which is supposed to act as a “cushion” in order to prevent the end of two bones from rubbing unto each other. In osteoarthritis, the cartilage between the joints loses its elasticity and then degenerates.  In time, the cartilage may thin out, or disappear altogether, causing bones to rub unto each other leading to extreme pain.

The following factors may lead to the development of osteoarthritis:

  • Medical experts have discovered that genes, or heredity, can actually make a person more predisposed to develop osteoarthritis.  A particular gene is responsible for collagen production.  Collagen is an important protein component in cartilage.  Abnormality in the gene may lead to premature degradation of cartilage which may cause osteoarthritis.
  • Obesity puts on excessive amounts of pressure in the joints because of the excess weight, which may cause strain. The joints that are responsible in weight-bearing, such as the hip, knee and ankle joints, are the ones that are most commonly affected.
  • Being inactive for long periods may cause the joints to become stiff, dysfunctional and painful because muscles around the joint can weaken with inactivity.
  • On the other hand, overuse of the joints, or continuously exposing them to extreme, high-impact activities can cause repetitive strains and stresses. This may also lead to joint injuries.
  • It is said that the main cause of osteoarthritis is wear-and-tear.  In old age, the joints have been exposed to too much activity since childhood and this puts the person at increased risk for osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis can be debilitating.  It can significantly affect a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living sometimes causing the patient to lose independence.  Symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

  • Pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Nodules in the fingers
  • Tenderness in the joints
  • Swelling
  • Crepitus (crackling sound upon joint movement)
  • Difficulty in movement

A Study on Osteoarthritis

The effects of osteoarthritis can be devastating.  This propels people, especially those who are in the field of medicine, to continuously look for ways to prevent the onset of the condition or to somehow slow its progression.

In line with this, a group of researchers enrolled 132 participants (66 men and 99 women whose ages ranged from 45 to 55) in the National Institutes of Health Osteoarthritis Initiative who have not exhibited signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis but whose risk for developing osteoarthritis of the knee is high.  In addition, 33 body mass index- and age-matched controls were also included in the study.

Basing on the participant’s response to the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) questionnaire, they were divided into three strength training and exercise levels.  The strength training groups were divided as to how often they performed these exercises:  none at all, minimal only and frequently.  The exercise levels were composed of sedentary, light and moderate to strenuous. Also, analysis was made on knee-bending activities.

What the Study Revealed

According to the senior author of the study, Dr. Thomas M. Link, the results revealed that joining in high impact activities like running for more than an hour daily, thrice a week or more, is linked to more cartilage degeneration and can potentially increase the risk for osteoarthritis development.  On one hand, participating in light exercise and avoiding repeated knee-bending activities can protect a person from osteoarthritis. Dr. Link is from San Francisco’s University of California, a chief of musculoskeletal imaging and a professor of radiology.

The participants were asked to undergo MRI exams, which showed that the group who engaged in light exercises and those with minimal strength training had the healthiest cartilage in the knee, as compared to the participants who either had frequent or no strength training at all. Women who indulged in moderate to strenuous exercises and did strength training were also linked to increased water content and degenerated collagen in their knees. A co-author of the study, Keegan K. Novis, B.S., R.N., said that the results suggests that performing moderate to strenuous exercises can speed up the degeneration of cartilage, putting women at a higher risk for osteoarthritis.

Moreover, the findings also indicated that doing knee-bending activities frequently, like climbing up more than 10 flights of stairs per day, squatting or kneeling for a minimum of 30 minutes daily, or lifting objects that weighs more than 25 pound, were linked to cartilage abnormalities and higher water content.

Conclusion

The researchers suggested that performing light exercises, like frequent walking and swimming, is a much safer choice in order to help maintain healthy cartilage and, of course, healthy joints.

How to Promote Healthy Joints Naturally

You probably have heard this many times already, but nevertheless, I’ll say it again: healthy eating helps promote a healthy body.  Contrary to what some people say, taking medications does not cure everything.  Aside from the expenses, you are also in danger of adverse effects that it can bring.  How about going for what is natural? You could start with making the decision to eat healthy, and eat foods that will help promote healthy joints.  Here are some of them:

  • Glucosamine is a compound that produces glycosaminoglycan which is needed for healthy cartilage.  Some of the foods that are rich in glucosamine include sweet almond oil, crab shells, lobster shells and shrimp shells.
  • Manganese is a mineral that helps build healthy cartilage. This supports the function of glucosamine inside the body.  Examples of food sources of manganese are nuts, green leafy vegetables, seafoods, whole grain breads and beans.
  • Omega-3 Fatty acids exert anti-inflammatory effects that helps ease swelling and pain associated with osteoarthritis.  Top food sources for Omega-3 Fatty Acids are egg yolks, walnuts, flax seeds, cod liver oil, and salmon.
  • Vitamin C helps the body in forming collagen which is a protein found in cartilage, tendons and bones.  Examples are kiwi fruit, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, papaya, potatoes, peaches, nectarines, lychees, raspberries, grapefruit, guava, black currant, orange, lemon, cabbage, cauliflower, and many

Easing the pain caused by arthritis

Arthritis comes from the Greek word “arthron” meaning joint. Arthritis literally means ‘joint inflammation’. According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are more than 100 different diseases that produce joint pain and inflammation – everything from the flu to certain cancers. The two most common forms of ‘arthritis’ are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

What can cause arthritis?

Other diseases and infections which cause arthritis include:

gout*, psoriasis*, tuberculosis*.

*gout is a metabolic disease characterised by painful inflammation of certain joints, especially of the big toe and foot. One of the main causes is sodium urate which is deposited into these parts of the body. This is often caused by a diet being too rich in sugar, wine or junk foods.

*psoriasis: a skin disease characterised by the formation of reddish spots and patches covered with silvery scales: tends to run in families.

*tuberculosis: a communicable disease caused by infection with the bacterium tubercle bacillus, most frequently affecting the lungs.

Our circulation formula or detox & cleanse products should be considered.

Osteoarthritis symptoms and pain relief

Osteoarthritis (osteo – bones or bones) is a degenerative disorder in which the cartilage between the joints wears away. The body attempts to repair this damage by producing bony outgrowths at the margins of affected joints, but these, in fact, cause pain and stiffness.

It is usually age-related and affects the hips, knees, spine and shoulders in particular. Obesity is an aggravating factor and excess weight can make it much worse.

Rheumatoid arthritis treatment

Rheumatoid* arthritis is a chronic, progressive disorder. The synovial* membrane lining the joint becomes inflamed, spreading over and eroding the cartilage, causing the characteristic pain and stiffness. Anaemia*, joint infections and pericarditis* are all complications of rheumatoid arthritis.

Definitions:

*rheumatoid: from latin rheumatisums catarrh, from Greek rheumatismos, from rheum : a watery discharge from the eyes or nose.

*synovial: a transparent lubrication fluid, secreted by the membranes lining the joints and tendon sheaths, etc

*anaemia: a deficiency in the number of red blood cells in the blood or in their reduced haemoglobin content.

*pericarditis: inflammation of the membranous sac enclosing the heart.

What can be done about arthritis?

For more information visit the improve my circulation page. Here you will see much more information about improving circulation and the benefits for arthritis.

Ginger

Ginger is a fantastic herb. It has been used for the treatment of many aliments. Studies show it is very beneficial in relieving arthritis. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it a well know arthritis treatment.

Ginger contains zingibain, a special proteolytic* enzyme. Research shows that proteolytic enzymes have anti-inflammatory properties. Taken as a tincture, capsule, as a tea or fresh, it does not have any reported side effects to high dosages. A dish prepared with ginger will actually give you a medicinal dose of the herb.

*proteolytic: the hydrolysis of proteins into simpler compounds by the action of enzymes.

Cayenne

Cayenne Pepper or Red Pepper ( Capsicum frutescens ) is another wonderful herb, with a wide range of medical properties to heal the body. Considered one of the best local and circulatory stimulants, cayenne may be used externally for poor circulation, unbroken chilblains and pains associated with arthritis and lumbago Capsicum creams are readily available or you can add a few drops of cayenne tincture to an ointment. If you do add to a cream, use sparingly at first gradually increasing the dosage.

Cayenne can be very hot and some people are sensitive. So test it first. Taken internally cayenne stimulates the heart, regulating the blood flow and strengthening the arteries and capillaries. Cayenne also contains capsaicin, a pain-relieving chemical. This also triggers the body to release endorphins, natures own opiates. Take cayenne as a tincture for fast acting absorption, and include the spice in your food.

Garlic and Ginkgo Biloba

Both garlic and ginkgo biloba have been shown to help with circulation and improve blood flow. This is important where arthritis is concerned. You have to try to improve your circulation. This will help bring oxygen to the affected area and take away harmful deposits which have built up.

All of these herbs may help. We have produced a special formula which includes all four of these herbs: ginger, cayenne, garlic and ginkgo biloba. You can see more information about the circulation formula here (click).

Other things which may help:

Bromelain a proteclytic enzyme present in pineapples helps prevent inflammation. Bromelain helps the body get rid if immune antigen complex compounds that are inflicted in some arthritic conditions In addition to zingibain and bromelain there are other proteclytic enzymes that have similar effects. Kiwifruit, paw paw and figs are excellent sources. Calcium is always needed by the body and especially to aid in the prevention of osteoporosis.

Food and herbs high in calcium are : Alfalfa, Liquorice, Red clover shoots, Camomile, Chives, Coltsfoot, Dandelion, Horsetail, Meadowsweet, Nettle, Plantain, Watercress, Cabbage, Thyme and basil.

Devils Claw a tuber found in South Africa contains a glycoside called harpagoside that helps to reduce inflammation in joints. Best taken in the tincture form especially for inflamed joints. Also good for itchy skin with no obvious cause. One caution, this herb should be avoided during pregnancy.

Additional herbs that will assist in treating arthritis are: Turmeric, Willow a natural pain killer, Liquorice which has anti-inflammatory qualities, rosemary, oregano, basil, camphor, celery seed, meadowsweet.

Stinging Nettles have been used for thousands of years!

Nature provides us with many plants that will aid in the relieving of joint pain. The most radical and perhaps the most daunting is Stinging Nettles. It is called urtication – from nettles botanical name, Utrica dioica- and dates back to the biblical times. Quiet simply the plant is grasped in a gloved hand and the stiff, swollen joint is swatted, thrashed with the sting. Urtication often provides considerable relief. The tiny stingers of the nettle plant actually provide microinjections of several chemicals, one of which is histamine.

The theory is, these chemicals, as well as causing the sting, trigger anti-inflammatory action by the body and so relieve arthritis. This is an ancient folklore, that seems to work for many people all over the world. Nettles grow in may countries and in each stinging nettles has developed a reputation as a treatment for arthritis. For the less adventurous of us, a fresh nettle tea or eating nettles will offer the same long term benefits. Gently steam the young tender leaves, and enjoy as a vegetable. They do lose the stinging effect when cooked!

Alternative Arthritis Remedies By Max Peace

The term arthritis is used to classify a group of health situations with cause pain and stiffness symptoms.

Among the most common forms there are the Osteoarthritis and the Rheumatoid Arthritis. The most common causes are considered to be genetic predisposition, traumas and “wear and tear” factors caused by advancing age, However many people reach old age without any form of arthritis.

There are many other less frequent forms of arthritis such as fibromyalgia, gout, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and more.

Some important factors which influence this conditions are the following:

  • Increase of toxins in the tissues
  • Decreased integrity in the stomach and intestine lining
  • Excess of damaging microorganisms
  • Decreased circulation in painful areas

Many forms of arthritis often have some degree of auto immune involvement.

The toxic waste is one of the explanations used by Chinese medicine or by Indian Ayurvedic systems. A similar explanation of Western medicine is the presence of  Circulating Immune Complexes (also known as CICs) which are molecules which exit from the gastrointestinal tract because of its decreased integrity. The immune system recognizes them as foreign invaders and increases the production of antibodies to fight them. Often these antibodies attack the connective tissues.

The decreased integrity of the gastrointestinal tract is also known as “leaky gut syndrome.” and allows large molecules to exit through the gastrointestinal lining and enter the bloodstream. This often happens to people who suffer from joint and muscle pains because of excessive autoimmune responses. Another problem is the proliferation of unfriendly organisms such as bacteria, fungi, yeast and parasites. They also cause autoimmune responses. An additional problem is also the decreased circulation in some areas of the body because it causes decreased availability of the nutrients needed for the repair and growth of healthy tissues.

Traditional medicine tries mainly to alleviate the symptoms and reduce the pain. Natural medicine tries instead to address the causes of illness and improve the diet, the lifestyle. It tries to avoid toxic factors. the presence of microorganisms and all these lifestyle changes will eventually increase wellness and reduce the disease.

This article is only an introduction to alternative arthritis remedies and therefore we mention only a few examples of remedies as follows:

a) Some herbs may be useful for the organs of elimination and detoxification (i,e bowels, kidneys, liver, lungs, skin and connective tissues), by removing both external and internal toxins. They can be added to cleansing diets, colon hydrotherapy, fasting, homeopathic detoxification and saunas. Some useful herbs for detoxification are Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum),Burdock (Arctium lappa) and Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). It is also advisable to help the liver to process toxins by adding supplements which contain Sulphur such as MSM and amino acids such as cysteine, glutathione, methionine, and taurine.

b) Some herbs which can be useful to counteract the decreased intestinal integrity are soothing herbs such as L-glutamine, Marshmallow root and Okra. Gingko biloba is very useful to increase circulation to the small capillaries and is also useful as an anti-oxidant.

c) Other herbs can be useful to discourage the growth of pathogenic micro organisms and to support the immune system. For instance Barberry root can be useful to kill parasites, to tone up the intestinal tract and to help the liver to eliminate bacteria, streptococci and other micro organisms. It is also useful to include Berberine (a natural Cox II inhibitor), Citrus Seed Extract which acts against micro organisms and Black Walnut Hulls which is a vermifuge (worm destroyer).

d) Poor circulation can be helped by other substances such as Menthol, Capsiacin, Camphor, Boswellia (Boswellia seratta) and Wintergreen(Gaultheria procumbens). Moreover pain can be counteracted by Willow Bark (Salix alba), Kava-Kava (Piper methysticum), Jamaican Dogwood (Piscidia spp.) and other substances

The Thief Called Arthritis

If you’re like a lot of people who have been posting lately, arthritis pain is really bugging you. It’s the worst, isn’t it? Arthritis is a disease that keeps you from doing most of the things you want to do and pretty much sucks the pleasure out of even the things you can do.

I don’t just think of arthritis as a disease; it’s a thief. Arthritis has robbed the world of some of its greatest geniuses.

The painter Renoir had rheumatoid arthritis! As the disease progressed, however, he was unable to hold the brush without tying it to his wrist. And Dr. Christian Barnard, the world’s first successful heart transplant surgeon, was forced to retire in 1983 because of the arthritis pain in his hands.

Imagine how many masterpieces or how many lives could have been saved if these geniuses hadn’t been crippled by pain.

And I wonder what YOU could would be doing to make our world better (and your life better) if you didn’t have to spend your days in pain, wishing there was something you could do to make it stop.

Sadly, traditional arthritis treatments have focused on ‘curing’ arthritis. And as you probably already know, this is a disease that can’t be cured. But you may not realize that even if you have arthritis, the pain of arthritis CAN be stopped.

How do I know this? Because of Chris Callahan. He’s an anti-arthritis crusader and a new ‘friend’ of this blog. I’ll tell you more about him in a minute.

They say that misery loves company, and if you suffer from arthritis, you’re in very good company. Actresses Kathleen Turner and Aida Tuturro (from the Sopranos) and basketball great Shaquille O’Neal and Olympic skating princess Dorothy Hamill all suffer from arthritis pain.

I guess when Hollywood and sports superstars start complaining; the news media sits up and take notice. And perhaps that’s why I’ve been seeing a lot more about arthritis pain in the news, lately.

What I find strange is this: the one thing I haven’t seen in the media is any ‘good news’ about arthritis pain. And that’s a pity, because there are dozens of things you can do to fight back against the ouches, twinges, and discomfort of arthritis. These are safe, natural treatments being used worldwide, but (in my opinion) the profit motive of the big pharmaceutical industries has made it difficult for this information to be shared.

That’s where Chris comes in. Chris started out in the field of medical sales, but his real passion is good health through lifestyle management. When a friend was diagnosed with arthritis, Chris went on a ‘mission question’ to find whether better, safer options for pain management existed.

What he found was something better. After extensive research into worldwide clinical trials and research studies, Chris found more than two dozen ways to address arthritis pain…and banish it.

These alternative cures may not get a lot of media coverage, but they’re helping people all over the globe stop their arthritis suffering.

One of the things I like best about having a blog is that it lets ME let YOU know about important advancements in health and wellness that can improve your life. So here’s the ‘good news’ I want to share with you today on this blog:

No matter what type of arthritis you have, you CAN find lasting relief from your pain.

Arthritis Indicators

It isn’t just the elderly who are affected by arthritis. While it is true that a lot of people will acquire arthritis as they get older, it is also true that plenty of younger people are afflicted with it as well. Many men and women acquire arthritis after splitting a bone. Early arthritis is sometimes genetic. I

f you discover ways to recognize the early indicators of the disease it’ll make you better able to treat it. This can help you maintain full range of movements for longer in life. The earlier you permit arthritis take hold, the more difficult it is going to be for you to exercise and stay in shape. Keep an eye out for these things.

Joint pain is one of the biggest signs of arthritis. While joint pain is an indicator of any number of things, it is one of the most obvious indicators of arthritis. When the soreness in your joints gets worse when there are weather changes or if you are sick or have a fever, this could be an indicator of early onset arthritis. Ask a family doctor to perform some X-Rays to figure out if there are some other causes for your joint pain. Do not just take a few painkillers and hope that it ends without attention.

A specifically distressful sign of arthritis is the reduced ability to move your joints normally. Some stiffness is common. If our muscular tissues are tight or, if we catch the flu or maybe a virus, our joints will get stiff. If the stiffness sticks around even after the other stuff has got much better, you should get a doctor to check it out. You cannot simply “exercise it away” and hope for the best. This might result in you tearing your muscles and making the condition a lot worse. A doctor is capable of doing some muscle exams and make it easier to figure out if arthritis is the culprit behind your inability to move properly.

Are the joints warm? Talk to a medical doctor. Warm joints means that the body is sending additional blood to those places in an attempt to fix a problem that you probably cannot see. If your joints are hotter than alternative areas in your body you’ll want to call your doctor immediately. It’s true that this may be a hint of arthritis but it can also be a symptom for something worse. The only way to learn for sure is if you talk with your doctor and run some tests.

An arthritis diagnosis does not ought to be the end of the world. More and more advancements are made in this area every day. In fact, when you catch it in the early stages, there are medicines and therapies that you can use to help greatly slow down the advancement of the disease. You are certainly not tied to suffering and copper bracelets anymore. There happen to be a lot of new developments that allow people to maintain their range of motion for a long time. Arthritis is a term that includes a group of disorders that affect your joints and muscles. Arthritis symptoms include joint pain, inflammation and limited movement of joints. When a joint is inflamed it may be swollen, tender, warm to the touch or red. Surrounding each joint is a protective capsule holding a lubricating fluid to aid in motion. Cartilage, a slippery smooth substance, covers most joints to assure an even, fluid motion of the joint.
