Simple Steps to Lower Blood Pressure

I received some interesting information on the HSI – Daily Health Newsletter and I copy below the main points:

When it comes to determining the cause of high blood pressure, modern medicine remains largely in the dark.

The majority of high blood pressure cases are still considered a mystery and are labelled essential hypertension which as many a medical student has joked in the past means: Essentially, we don’t have a clue.

Whilst hypertension drugs do reduce high blood pressure, they’re still not correcting the underlying problem. Not to mention that nearly all of them have multiple unwanted side effects ranging from fatigue and impotence, to heart failure.

So, assuming you’ve done all the obvious things like stopping smoking, reducing alcohol and losing weight with the help of a healthy balanced diet and regular exercise, what else can you do today to help control your blood pressure and maintain it at safe levels?

1.Up your intake of Vitamin D

Without adequate vitamin D, one of your genes (a tiny part of your DNA) initiates the formation of excess quantities of a molecule called renin. Renin breaks down another molecule, called angiotensinogen, into angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is converted into angiotensin II by a substance known as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). The end result angiotensin II is the bad stuff that (in excess amounts) causes high blood pressure.

Vitamin D persuades the gene that controls renin production to become less active, and the end result is less angiotensin II and lower blood pressure.

Take 1,000iu of vitamin D a day. However, you should be aware that it frequently takes two to three months for significant changes to start taking place and six to eight months for vitamin D to take full effect.

2.Increase you levels of CoEnzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

In a double-blind clinical trial, a group of 76 patients with hypertension took 60mg of CoQ10 or a placebo for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, the CoQ10 group had a significant reduction in their blood pressure, leading the researchers to conclude: CoQ10 may safely be offered to hypertensive patients as an alternative treatment option. Take 60 to 120mg of CoQ10 a day.

3. The best fast-acting food supplement for high blood pressure that we’ve come across has been developed by Dr Stacey Miller, a Naturopathic doctor in Florida.

This breakthrough herbal compound has been clinically proven to lower blood pressure fast… in some cases by as much as 9.6 points in as little as 28 days.

Researchers from the University of Maine and Case Western University discovered that this safe and non- aggressive formula lowered blood pressure by an average of 10.6 points systolic and 9.3 points diastolic over the 12 week trial period.

What’s more, it has no side effects and can even be safely used in conjunction with other medication.

7 Lifestyle Changes to Prevent Hypertension

Written by Frank Mangano

Hypertension

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in three Americans is diagnosed with having high blood pressure. This accounts to almost 31.3 percent of the total American population. Data shows that in the year 2006, 326,000 people died because of the condition. In fact, last 2010, the United States have spent a whopping amount of $76.6 billion in hypertension health care services.

Hypertension is a cause of concern since it can cause life-threatening complications.  Not only will it damage the arteries where the blood flows, it will also cause destruction of the major organs in the body, such as the heart, brain, kidneys and the lungs. Continuously high pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the arteries could damage its linings and could therefore result to scarring, which can ultimately harden the arteries. Because of the hardening of the arteries, heart attack may occur.

Furthermore, the very thin blood vessels of the brain may result to which will eventually lead to stroke or aneurysm.  When the blood vessels in the kidneys are narrowed, the kidneys will not be able to do its function of filtering toxic substances, which will cause accumulation and allow it to return to the system and cause more metabolic damages.  These are but a few of the dangers of hypertension.

We therefore see the need for everybody to control their blood pressure and to prevent hypertension, so as to live a healthy life. Below are easy ways to control blood pressure:

  1. Lose weight.Studies have shown that being overweight increases the chances of acquiring hypertension by two to six times.  What is the relationship between weight and hypertension? According to studies, when there is stimulation of the retention of sodium, as well as increasing release of catecholamine, the body becomes highly sensitive to sodium and will result to hyperinsulinemia.  This causes the body to bulge as it tries to balance insulin and sugar.  Clinical researches have also shown that there is 50% to 300% chance of getting hypertension when one is overweight.  Therefore, it is imperative to find a weight-loss program to help in preventing hypertension.
  2. Quit smoking.Smoking causes high blood pressure due to its nicotine content.  As one continuously smokes, nicotine accumulates in large amounts.  Nicotine causes the blood vessels to constrict. As the blood vessels constrict, blood pressure increases due to the narrowed opening for the blood to pass through.  Constriction also causes blood vessel spasm, which will eventually cause the heart to beat faster.  By decreasing or eliminating smoking, there will be less stimulation by nicotine, preventing the secretion of catecholamines that causes the increase in adrenaline responsible for constricting the blood vessels.
  3. Eating a healthy diet, including the DASH dietWhat is the DASH eating plan? DASH means Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.  According to the studies made by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI),  The DASH eating plan is a guideline that limits the intake of saturated fat and cholesterol, but focuses in the intake of foods rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, protein and fiber.  The foods rich in these nutrients have the capacity to lower the blood pressure.  Several studies for the DASH diet have shown that the risk of getting hypertension is decreased when there is an increase of fruits and vegetable intake and increase in fat-free or low-fat milk products. Potassium from fruits and vegetable is more effective in lowering blood pressure than those from supplements.
  4. Reduce the amount of sodium in your diet to less than 1,500 milligrams a daySodium retains water. The more sodium there is inside the body, the more water is retained.  When there is an increase water retention, the heart tries to pump the increasing blood volume away from the body.  As the pumping motion increases, blood pressure increases.  Therefore, decreasing sodium intake is important in order to decrease the pumping effort of the heart.  But how much is enough? Essentially, it depends on the individual’s activity, but the average person needs 2,325 milligrams of sodium per day; that is roughly 1 teaspoon of table salt.  However, for those with hypertension, sodium intake should not be more than 1,500 milligrams.  Among the various types of salt preparation, the organic unrefined sea salt is much better as it contains less sodium.  I highly recommend using organic salt. Despite the fact that it contains less iodine, it is much better than table salt which has 97-99% sodium chloride.
  5. Be wary of frozen foodsDuring busy days, it is most convenient to just grab frozen foods in the grocery than to actually take the time to prepare meals yourself.  But everyone should be aware that frozen foods contain high amounts of calories, sodium and fats. You may not be aware of it but frozen foods have hidden sodium – loads of it. The high amount of sodium can help in the preservation process; however, it is not healthy. Food items which have less than 800 milligrams of sodium are enough amounts for the required dietary intake.
  6. Get regular aerobic exerciseExercise may be considered the ultimate drug free approach in lowering the blood pressure or controlling it.  Aerobic exercise, which affects the cardiovascular system of the body, when done regularly will allow the heart to pump more blood into the arteries with less effort.  If the heart works with less effort, pressure on the arteries decreases, this, of course, will result to a decrease in blood pressure.  According to several studies, exercising regularly will actually lower the systolic blood pressure. So what types of exercises will result to the enhanced capability of the cardiovascular system? Any activity that increases the heart rate and the respiratory rate are desirable. This is what most people call aerobic exercise. Walking, brisk walking, climbing stairs, jogging, cycling, swimming are very effective activities that will lower the pressure exerted by the blood on the blood vessels.
  7. Limit alcohol intake. Two drinks a day for men, one drink a day for women. When a doctor says limit to 1 drink for women or 2 drinks for men, what does it mean? One drink may mean 5 ounces of wine, or 12 ounces of beer, or 1 ½ ounces of 80-proof whiskey.  Although further studies are being made to support the notion that alcohol indeed causes high blood pressure, some scientists believe that alcohol stimulates the sympathetic nervous system which causes the blood pressure to increase.  This is one reason why alcohol intake should be controlled.

Stroke, or brain attack, is the 3rd leading cause of mortality in the United States.  Each year, over 140,000 Americans die because of stroke, and 500,000 people are left temporarily or permanently disable.  The condition is primarily caused by the absence of blood flowing to the brain, depriving the organ of its much needed oxygen and nutrients.

Deficient vitamin D levels increases stroke risk twice over in white people, but not in blacks.    This is according to a team of researchers coming from Johns Hopkins.  Vitamin D is an essential nutrient obtained from the rays of the sun as well as in various food sources.

    Vitamin D and Stroke

According to the researchers, their research findings supports evidence obtained from previous studies at Johns Hopkins, associating vitamin D insufficiency to higher death rates, cardiovascular diseases and the development of peripheral artery diseases in most adults.  The findings will be presented at the yearly Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association, to be held on November 15 in Chicago.

The research team from Johns Hopkins said that the results of the study failed to explain the reason behind high stroke rates among African Americans, who are obviously expected to have insufficient levels of vitamin D because of their dark skin pigment.  The dark pigmentation present in the skin of African Americans blocks the rays of the sun which is an important source of vitamin D. The study involved 176 participants who died because of stroke in a period of 14 years, 60 of whom were black, and 116 participants were white.  Nonetheless, African Americans are 65% more likely to suffer from severe bleeding in the brain, or a disruption of blood flowing to the brain compared to whites, when vitamin D insufficiency, age and other known stroke risk factors were included in the analysis.

Dr. Erin Michos, M.H.S., a co-lead investigator of the study, said that higher rates for diabetes and hypertension explain why black people have excess stroke risk in contrast to whites.  But the 65 percent risk is far too much, Michos emphasized.  She thinks that there might be other reasons behind the said problem but deficits in vitamin D is not one of them.  She further reiterated that vitamin D deficiency should not be blamed for the high rates of stroke among black people.

Almost 8,000 primarily healthy women and men of both races were included in the recent study, which is actually a part of a bigger, national health status evaluation that is in progress.  The researchers evaluated the risk of death due to stroke between people who have high amounts of vitamin D to those with the lowest vitamin D levels in their blood.  Data revealed that 32.3% of black people and 6.6% of whites possessed very low levels of vitamin D in their blood – which as not more than 15 ng/ml.

Furthermore, Dr. Michos said that the probable explanation for this is that blacks may have adapted to the chronic deficiency in vitamin D which is already present for generations. There is no need, therefore, to increase the levels of vitamin D in blacks in order to equate with the vitamin’s levels in whites just to lessen stroke risk. She advised that the recorded mortality rate of blacks due to stroke may not be statistically sufficient to associate it with deficient vitamin D.

The study was funded by the P.J. Schafer Cardiovascular Research Fund and the American College of Cardiology.

Why do we need vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that helps in the absorption and breakdown of phosphorus and calcium.  Phosphorus is needed for the maintenance of healthy teeth and bones as well as for energy metabolism and maintaining the balance of acids and bases in the body.  Calcium, on one hand, is important in constructing, forming and maintaining teeth and bones. So this explains why deficient levels of vitamin D can affect the levels of Phosphorus and Calcium in the body.

Aside from its important function in maintaining healthy bones, vitamin D has an important role in the preventing the growth of abnormal cells and in strengthening the immune system. Insufficient levels of vitamin D have been linked to higher rates of depression and breast cancer, especially among the elderly.

Previous studies have been conducted with regards to the health benefits of vitamin D.  Here are some examples:

    • According to scientists from Children’s Hospital Boston, Massachusetts General Hospital and University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, vitamin D may be an essential way to boost the immune system from conditions like the common cold.
    • The director of the Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Center of the Oregon Health and Science University, Dennis Bourdette, said that vitamin D may decrease the risk of multiple sclerosis.
    • A study involving 3000 European men, with ages ranging from 40 to 79 years, revealed that vitamin D may play a role in maintaining brain health, especially on the later part of life.
    • In a research conducted at Georgia, USA’s Medical College, results revealed that vitamin D is possibly associated to the maintenance of a healthy weight.
    • Vitamin D can also reduce the frequency and severity of asthma symptoms, and reduce the possibility of asthma-induced hospitalizations.  This is according to a study conducted by the researchers of Harvard Medical School after they have monitored 616 children located in Costa Rica.
    • Women with high risk of rheumatoid arthritis can also benefit from vitamin D.

    Sources of Vitamin D

Dr. Michos suggests that people should make sure that they maintain healthy levels of vitamin D by the regular intake of fish such as tuna and salmon.  She also recommends daily sun exposure for brief periods to take advantage of the sun’s ultraviolet light which produces vitamin D. 10-15 minutes of sun exposure is advised.

Some of the top healthy sources of vitamin D are:

    • Salmon
    • Tuna
    • Cod Liver Oil
    • Mushrooms
    • Oatmeal
    • Sweet Potatoes
    • Dandelion Greens
    • Egg Yolks

I suffer from high blood pressure and I have been prescribed drugs to lower blood pressure and statins against cholesterol. I have been therefore very interested in an article published on the Mercola.com website that I re-publish below for your convenience.

It discusses the importance of CoQ10 and how it can be used instead of the dangerous statins.

The Common Drug that Destroys Your Memory

    Posted By Dr. Mercola | February 12 2011 | 326,501 views

In this interview, Dr. Duane Graveline, a family doctor with 23 years experience and a former astronaut, discusses the health implications of cholesterol, statin drugs, and coenzyme Q10.

    Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

Dr. Graveline has an interesting background that makes him particularly suited to speak on the topic of statin drugs. He’s a medical doctor with 23 years of experience whose health was seriously damaged by a statin drug. His personal questions brought him out of retirement to investigate statins, which he’s been doing for the past 10 years.

As a former astronaut, he would get annual physicals at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. In 1999 his cholesterol hit 280 and he was given a prescription for Lipitor.
“When they suggested Lipitor (10 mg), I went along with it because I had no reason to be particularly worried about statin drugs,” he says. “I had used it a year or so before my retirement, but I wasn’t a big user.”
However, it quickly became apparent that something was seriously wrong.
“It was six weeks later when I experienced my first episode of what was later diagnosed as transient global amnesia,” Dr. Graveline says.

“This is an unusual form of amnesia wherein you immediately, without the slightest warning, are unable to formulate new memory and you can no longer communicate. Not because you cannot talk, but you can’t remember the last syllable that was spoken to you. So nothing you say is relevant anymore. In addition, you have a retrograde loss of memory, sometimes decades into the past.”
He “woke up” about six hours later in the office of a neurologist, who gave him the diagnosis: transient global amnesia. He quit taking the Lipitor despite the reassurances from his doctors that the drug was not of concern, and that it was just a coincidence.

He had no relapses during the remainder of the year, but his cholesterol was still around 280 at his next physical. He was again urged to take Lipitor, and he relented.
“I admit I was concerned, but I had talked to maybe 30 doctors and a few pharmacologists during the interval,” Dr. Graveline says. “They all said “statins don’t do that.” So I allowed myself to go back on statins but this time I took just 5 mg.

…[E]ight weeks later, I had my second, and my worst episode. In this one, I was a 13-year-old high school student for 12 hours… This is what convinced me, when I finally woke up, that something was wrong with the statin drugs. And yet, the doctors were, for years after that, still saying that this was just a remarkable coincidence.
This took me out of retirement and I’ve been actively involved in researching statin drugs ever since.”

Statin Drugs: Not Nearly as Safe as You’re Told

Dr. Graveline has since published a book about his discoveries called Lipitor: Thief of Memory.
“In trying to reach an explanation, I called Joe Graedon and asked him if he had ever heard of any unusual reactions associated with statins,” Dr. Graveline says of his initial investigations
He was directed to the statin effects study by Beatrice Golomb in San Diego, California, and his story was also published in a syndicated newspaper column. Within weeks, the web site he had created received reports of 22 cases of transient global amnesia, along with hundreds of cases of cognitive damage. At present, over 2,000 cases of transient global amnesia associated with the use of statins have been reported to FDA’s MedWatch.

But cognitive problems are not the only harmful aspect of these drugs. Other serious adverse reactions include:

    • Personality changes / mood disorders
    • Muscle problems, polyneuropathy (nerve damage in the hands and feet), and rhabdomyolysis (a serious degenerative muscle tissue condition)
    • Sexual dysfunction
    • Immune suppression
    • Pancreas or liver dysfunction, including a potential increase in liver enzymes
    • Cataracts

According to Dr. Graveline, a form of Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS may also be a side effect, although the US FDA is resistant to accept the link found by their Swedish counterpart, and has so far refused to issue a warning.
“The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on this in July 2007 when Ralph Edwards, who directs the Vigibase in Sweden (the equivalent of the US MedWatch), reported ALS-like conditions in statin users worldwide,” Dr. Graveline says.
He has since forwarded hundreds of cases to MedWatch, but the FDA still has not been moved to act, and doctors are therefore unaware of the connection between this deadly disease and statin use.
“[W]e have anecdotal evidence that if you stop the statin drug early enough, some of these cases regress. That’s why we thought it was important that FDA issue a warning, but they haven’t,” Dr. Graveline says.
Today, all of these adverse effects, including the cognitive problems Dr. Graveline warned about 10 years ago, are supported by published research. MedWatch has received about 80,000 reports of adverse events related to statin drugs, and remember, only an estimated one to 10 percent of side effects are ever reported, so the true scope of statins’ adverse effects are still greatly underestimated.

For a more in-depth explanation of how statins damage your mitochondria and DNA, resulting in a variety of health problems, please listen to the interview in its entirety or read through the transcript as he discusses far more than I can include here.

How Statins Harm Your Brain Function

As is often the case with pharmaceutical drugs, the side effects end up teaching us new things about how the human body works. When statins first hit the market, conventional medicine was unaware of the importance of cholesterol for proper brain function. Now, researchers believe that statins’ adverse effects on cognition are due to cholesterol insufficiency.

Research also began to emerge in 2001 showing the importance of cholesterol in the formation of memories.
“Then we have… dolichols,” Dr. Graveline says. “[W]hen a statin is used, it blocks the mevalonate pathway to get at cholesterol inhibition. It works very beautifully. But in so doing, it blocks CoQ10, dolichols, as well as other major biochemicals…

[D]olichol is one that most doctors have never even heard of before, but it just so happens that dolichols are almost as important as CoQ10 and cholesterol in cell processing.”
In fact, dolichols are vital to a number of cellular processes, including:

    • Glycoprotein synthesis
    • Cell identification
    • Cell communication
    • Immunodefense
    • Neurohormone formation

Dr. Graveline goes on to explain that dolichols influence all the hormones involved with your mental condition, including your emotions and moods. And if you do not have sufficient dolichol, your entire process of neurohormone production will be altered—with potentially devastating results.
“[T]here are thousands of reports of aggressiveness and hostility, increased sensitivity, paranoia, depression and homicidal ideation,” Dr. Graveline says
There are also numerous reports of suicide.
“This whole range of what I call personality- or emotion and behavioral responses have to do with the dolichol deficiency brought on by the mevalonate blockade,” Dr. Graveline explains.

“It’s not just something that occurs in an occasional person… You know we’re all the same and yet we’re all different… You give one medicine to 10 people and if you’re really lucky, in six of them it will do what it’s supposed to do. That’s the way it is with this. I expect there are some people that won’t get any effects of dolichol suppression because they have alternative pathways. The same thing probably holds for CoQ10.”
That said, it’s important to realize that your brain also requires cholesterol in order for memory formation to function normally. In essence, statins suppress a number of vital elements for proper brain functioning, including cholesterol, antioxidants and co-factors like CoQ10, and dolichol.

At the same time, statins also create mitochondrial DNA and cellular damage, including in your brain.

Your brain uses glial cells as factories for producing its own cholesterol on demand. Unfortunately, glial cells are affected by statins in the same way as your liver cells, or any other cell in our body. So if you take a statin, you’re also harming your glial cells and when they cease to function normally, that on-demand cholesterol capability also ceases and your brain can no longer function properly.

The Importance of CoQ10 or, if You’re Over 40, Ubiquinol

It’s now clear that if you take statin drugs without taking CoQ10, your health is at serious risk as statin drugs deplete your body of this essential co-enzyme. As your body gets more and more depleted of CoQ10, you may suffer from fatigue, muscle weakness and soreness, and eventually heart failure. Coenzyme Q10 is also very important in the process of neutralizing free radicals.

So when your CoQ10 is depleted, you enter a vicious cycle of increased free radicals, loss of cellular energy, and damaged mitochondrial DNA.

Unfortunately, the majority of people who take statins are unaware of their need for CoQ10, and physicians rarely advise their patients to take this supplement along with their statin—at least in the United States. It’s also important to supplement right from the start. According to Dr. Graveline, once the mitochondrial damage and mutations are formed they cannot be reversed—no matter how much CoQ10 you take.

So early intervention is key. (Dr. Graveline goes into further detail of how CoQ10 offers protection against mitochondrial DNA damage in this interview, so for more information, please listen to it in its entirety.)If you decide to take a CoQ10 supplement and are over the age of 40, it’s important to choose the reduced version, called ubiquinol.

Ubiquinol is a FAR more effective form—I personally take 1-3 a day as it has far-ranging health benefits. Dr. Graveline concurs with this recommendation.

As for dosage, Dr. Graveline makes the following recommendation:

    • If you have symptoms of statin damage such as muscle pain, take anywhere from 200 to 500 mg
    • If you just want to use it preventively, 200 mg or less should be sufficient

There’s also evidence that CoQ10/ubiquinol is beneficial for Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer, and that large doses may be justified in those cases as well.

In addition, CoQ10 is believed to play an important role in preventing premature aging in general by preventing telomere shortening, which can slow or potentially even reverse the aging process. This is just one of the additional benefits of CoQ10, and one of the reasons why I take ubiquinol daily even though I’ve never been on a statin drug.

There are no reported side effects of CoQ10 supplementation, and neither I nor Dr. Graveline have ever heard of anyone overdosing on it. The only drawback is cost.

However, if you’re taking ubiquinol, here’s some cost-saving information for you.

Certified reduced ubiquinol is only manufactured by one company in the entire world, a Japanese company called Kaneca. They own the patent. So, as long as it’s certified ubiquinol, you can buy the cheapest brand you can find, because they’re all the same

Other Valuable Antioxidants for Optimal Health—Especially if You’re Taking a Statin

CoQ10, or preferably the reduced version, ubiquinol, is at the top of the list of important supplements when you’re taking a statin drug. But there are also other antioxidants and nutrients that can be helpful. For example, selenium is also seriously inhibited by statin drugs, and selenium, along with magnesium, are commonly involved as co-factors in a variety of biological functions.

    Other important nutrients include:

    • Vitamin C
    • Vitamin D
    • Vitamin E—An emerging form of vitamin E called tocotrienol is 50 times more powerful than tocopherol, which has been used for the past 60 years. It also helps produce cholesterol and has other biochemical advantages
    • Alpha-lipoic acid
    • L-carnitine—which helps metabolize fats properly. Since about 70 percent of your muscles’ energy comes from fats, it’s important to have the ability to metabolize them. INSERT LINE BREAK According to Dr. Graveline: “If you take L-carnitine and find that you suddenly feel much better, then you’ve just proven you need it for the rest of your life because you’re one of those people who have a dysfunction in this capability; you don’t have the means to properly burn fats at our muscle level… naturally you would then get weak when exercising. So it’s useful for making a diagnosis. If nothing happens after three months of a good dose, then I would say you can forget about L-carnitine.”

The Sad Truth: Even Your Doctor has Been Mislead About Cholesterol

That said, aside from taking CoQ10 if you’re on a statin, your diet really should be your primary source of nutrients. (For vitamin D, you’d ideally get it from sun exposure.) Supplements are just that; supplemental to an otherwise healthy diet.
“I think that when you have a statin associated muscle or nerve or even brain dysfunction, this is where you’ve got to go because that’s where the trouble is,” Dr. Graveline agrees.

“[I]f it’s cholesterol inhibition, you just eat more eggs… I can’t believe I went 17 years and never ate an egg. I can’t believe how gullible I was. I was this young medical doctor; I marched to that band of the cholesterol-causation people… I did everything I was supposed to do, and it was all wrong. I can’t believe that I was led astray, maybe for 25 years of my practice! It’s so bad to have to look back and realize you’ve been treating cardiovascular disease erroneously because you were doing what you were asked to do.The sad truth is that cholesterol, our supposed enemy for 35 years, has nothing to do with cardiovascular disease. it is the most important biochemical in your body.

… We all listened to what amounts to brainwashing. The brainwashing that we got from 1955 on, to just recently… They have liberalized the diet stuff recently though, so people are back to eating eggs and drinking whole milk and eating butter. I went around recommending margarine for so long, and margarine is what’s causing disease—butter is what’s helping to cure it. It’s incredible!”
This is true for the majority of our conventional medical professionals. They simply do not know better… which is all the more reason to arm yourself with the information you need to take control of your own health. Shunning statin drugs and addressing your lifestyle is the way to go if you have high cholesterol. For more information, please see my statin index page which includes a plethora of free guidance and clear advice.

    More Information

Dr. Graveline covers a lot of information in this interview, so I highly recommend you listen to the entire interview, or read through the transcript. You can also find more information on his web site: www.SpaceDoc.net .

Dr. Graveline’s site serves both as a tool for reporting statin complications, and a database of adverse effects, which are then forwarded to the appropriate agencies.

12 Ways to Drop Your Blood Pressure

    Written by Frank Mangano

High blood pressure, or hypertension, means putting on unnecessary added pressure on the arteries. This is because the blood is pushing towards the wall of the blood vessel as the heart pumps out blood. If the pressure stays high, and it keeps on rising over time, this can lead to a lot of damages in many parts of the body. The dangers of hypertension include conditions such as heart failure, embolism, thrombosis, heart attack, and stroke.

However, the dangers of hypertension won’t happen if we all take extra precautionary measures to avoid high blood pressure. If you are already diagnosed with one, it is important that you implement ways on how to lower your blood pressure.

    Some are as follows:

    1. Exercise daily – Getting regular exercise makes the heart stronger. Less effort will be needed to pump the blood out with a strong heart. The force on the arteries decreases and the blood pressure is lowered when the heart exerts less effort in pumping. Being active makes the systolic blood pressure – the first number in blood pressure reading – lower. However, it is essential to remember that, in order to achieve the health benefits that exercise promises, sticking to a regular exercise regimen is needed. It would take about three months for exercise to create an impact on your blood pressure, so continued action is advised.
    2. Avoid animal fats – Although some fat is required by the body, many studies have shown that it can even raise high blood pressure and increase the risk of stroke, depending on the type of fat that is consumed. In the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism, a study showed that fats, specifically saturated animal fats, significantly increase blood pressure. When fats taken from marine sources were consumed, such as fish oils and plant oils, there was no significant increase in blood pressure. Saturated animal fats that can be found on chicken, pork and beef should be clearly avoided when trying to fight high blood pressure.
    3. Avoid tobacco and alcohol when trying to lower your blood pressure. Nicotine found in cigarette or tobacco products can raise your blood pressure. In addition, the chemicals can also damage the arteries. Too much alcohol consumption can also lead to the same effect, although drinking it at the right amount can sometimes help. You should also look out for caffeine since recent studies show that regular consumption can increase blood pressure. This may appear difficult since tobacco, alcohol and caffeine are mostly a part of some people’s daily routine, so intake must at least be limited.
    4. Reduce weight – Reducing or controlling your weight can significantly lower your blood pressure. It will help you feel better.  It is advised that you should engage in more exercise to keep your heart healthy. It’s best to do it slowly, eating fewer calories than you burn. For example, replace a chocolate bar with small apple for lunch; have baked chicken instead of fried chicken during dinner; and take a 15 minute brisk walk after meals instead of sitting aimlessly.
    5. Get sufficient sleep – A study by Dr. Kristen L. Knutson published in the June 8 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine linked the insufficiency of sleep to increasing levels of blood pressure. Results showed that subjects who had shorter and lower quality of sleep had increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings. It was suggested that insufficient sleep affects the way the body responds to stress that may lead to increased blood pressure.
    6. Purchase a home monitor – Buying your own blood pressure monitor will help you keep track of your blood pressure levels regularly, especially if you are continuously experiencing high blood pressures. This will help you find out how your blood pressure changes during the day. It will also help your doctor find out how your treatment regimen is working in order to stabilize your blood pressure.
    7. Increase magnesium intake – Studies suggest that there is a certain link between magnesium and blood pressure. Diets that include numerous fruits and vegetables, widely known to contain potassium and magnesium, is consistently said to be associated with lowered the blood pressure. It was said that consuming and sticking to a diet plan that is rich in magnesium, potassium, calcium and low in fat and sodium can significantly lower blood pressure according to the DASH study (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). Another study also proved this case when they tested the effect of nutritional factors on 30,000 US male health professionals. The results of the study showed that lower risk of blood pressure was seen in those with greater magnesium intake.
    8. Listen to the sounds of soothing music – Listening to non-verbal, soothing, instrumental music for at least 30 minutes a day can have great effects on the human body. It relaxes the body through its slow and peaceful rhythm, thus lowering heart rate, and lightening up breathing and brain activity. This will reduce stress and eventually lower your blood pressure.
    9. Get Garlic – Consuming garlic, and garlic supplements, is of good use to people with mild high blood pressure, according to recent studies.  It can thin the blood and prevent it to clot, like aspirin – minus the side effects. Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract™ is a totally balanced garlic supplement that gives the full benefits of garlic, without the odor and aftertaste of other garlic supplements. Garlic is widely known as a hypertensive medication. Even researchers at the University of Mississippi proved the potential of garlic to reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
    10. Start Juicing – There are many fruits and vegetables that can aid in lowering blood pressure. Aside from directly eating them, you can also juice them. Some of my favorites include juicing carrot, apple, beet and celery because of their blood pressure-lowering activities. You can drink celery juice alone, or mix it with carrot. Beet root juice clearly helps in lowering and normalizing blood pressure. You can mix it with celery-carrot juice occasionally.
    11. Meditate – Meditation is considered by doctors worldwide to lower blood pressure levels. Stress is one of the major factors which cause high blood pressure, and meditating could help reduce stress. Transcendental Meditation (TM) is by far one of the easiest meditating techniques one could learn to lower high blood pressure at the same time reducing the need for blood pressure-lowering medications. This should be done daily. Research has also proven that TM can reduce high blood pressure without the need for medication.
    12. Visualize “lower blood pressure” – The mind has a very powerful control over the human body. It can influence our immunity and empower us to recover from conditions such as cancer and high blood pressure. Research has shown how visualization can trigger the body’s ability to self-heal. You can try visualizing your blood vessels opening as you exhale and this can actually help you relax. The mind has the greatest power than any other form of medication. If you try to visualize what happens in the body that can cause high blood pressure, you can see how things work, and think up of something to counter these.

The use of cinnamon can be traced way back remote times – Moses is said to have used cinnamon when he made the holy oil, and ancient nations gave cinnamon as a gift for monarchs and gods.  Cinnamon has been regarded as a very valuable spice, its value sometimes being likened to gold. Nations who were involved in trading centuries ago regard cinnamon as highly-priced and highly-coveted item.

Over the years, people have discovered the source of cinnamon and, with the advent of technology, acquiring cinnamon is no longer very difficult.  Cinnamon has been used as a condiment for cooking, giving the dish a sweet flavour coupled with an aroma like no other. Liqueurs, tea, cocoa, chocolates, breads and fruits have benefitted from the use of cinnamon.

Medical experts have been studying the health benefits that one can get from the consumption of cinnamon.  One case to prove that point is a recent randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study conducted by researchers from London’s Imperial College regarding the benefits of cinnamon on diabetes patients.

Cinnamon and Diabetes:  Is there a link?

In order to find the association between cinnamon and its effects on patients with diabetes, a group of researchers from the Imperial College in London, headed by Dr. Rajadurai Akilen, conducted a study which involved 58 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and whose mean age was 55. Each participant was randomly assigned to either of two groups:  one group received a supplement of 2 grams of cinnamon every day, and another group received placebo.  The length of time wherein the participants received the intervention was 12 weeks.

After the study, the results revealed that the intake of cinnamon supplement was linked to an average decrease in systolic blood pressure of 3.4 mmHg, and a decrease in diastolic blood pressure of 5.0 mmHg.  As for the results of the placebo group, no significant reduction in blood pressure was noted.

When it comes to the participants’ blood sugar level, the researchers noticed a decrease in glycated haemoglobin levels over twelve weeks in the cinnamon group – from 8.22 percent to 7.86 percent.  In the placebo group, on the other hand, researchers noted an increase in glycated haemoglobin levels – from 8.55 percent to 8.68 percent over a period of twelve weeks. Glycated haemoglobin is used in measuring the levels of sugar in the blood.

    The Conclusion

Dr. Akilen and his co-workers said that the clinical trial is a first in the UK which has confirmed significant valuable effects of 2 grams cinnamon on the blood pressure and glycated haemoglobin of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes coming from different ethnicities. The authors, writing in Diabetic Medicine, said that the 2 gram dose of cinnamon that was administered to the participants of the study was well tolerated and considered safe for the entire duration of the study. They concluded by saying that the durability and sustainability of cinnamon’s effects has not yet been tested, and its long-term safety and tolerability has not yet been determined. Nevertheless, the short-term effects of cinnamon use for type 2 diabetes patients appear to hold a lot of promise.

    Health Benefits of Cinnamon

    • It helps lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels.
    • Studies have shown that it has the ability to stop yeast infections that have become resistant to medications.
    • A study conducted by researchers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture located in Maryland revealed that cinnamon reduced the propagation of lymphoma and leukaemia cancer cells.
    • Cinnamon is said to prevent the formation of blood clots.
    • A study conducted at the Copenhagen University revealed that patients who were given half teaspoon of cinnamon powder mixed with one tablespoon of honey each morning prior to eating breakfast experienced a significant relief in pain brought about by arthritis after one week.
    • Another study indicated that inhaling the smell of cinnamon helps boost memory and cognitive function.

    The Facts on Diabetes

More and more people are being diagnosed with diabetes each day that the statistics appear to be very alarming. The European Union 25 currently has 19 million diabetics, and the numbers are expected to rise by up to 26 million by the year 2030.  Four percent of EU 25’s current total population are diabetics.  In the United States, 24 million people – or eight percent of America – are diabetics.  According to the 2005-2007 figures of the American Diabetes Association, the total cost being spent on diabetes is a whopping $174 billion, and $116 billion from this is being spent on medication.

Diabetes results from high amounts of sugar levels in the blood.  If left uncontrolled, diabetes will eventually cause problems in other parts of the body and will seriously interfere with the body parts’ normal functioning.  Examples of body parts that are most commonly affected by the complications brought about by uncontrolled diabetes include the eyes (diabetic retinopathy), feet (peripheral vascular disease), nerves (diabetic neuropathy), and the kidneys (diabetic nephropathy).  Being diagnosed with diabetes also puts a person at a higher risk for cardiovascular diseases as well as joint and bone disorders.  Sexual dysfunction, digestive and skin problems as well as oral and dental problems are long-term complications of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.

Top Five Ways to Naturally Lower Blood Sugar Levels

    • Get Enough Sleep

Studies have shown that the quality and duration of sleep can affect the body’s ability to properly regulate the production of insulin and that interrupted or short sleep can disturb insulin production. Insulin is produced by the pancreas in order to control the levels of sugar in the blood.

In order to ensure a good night’s sleep, do some exercises during the early part of the day.  It will also help if you establish a regular time for sleeping and waking up.  Also, avoid caffeine especially before going to bed.

    • Stay Active

Regular exercise helps a person lose extra pounds and promotes better health.  However, researchers have also discovered that exercising is associated with the way the liver gives out glucose in order for it to be used by the body.  It is advised that workouts should be done right before a meal. This is according to researchers from the University of Michigan.

    • Reduce your Stress Level

Stress causes the release of hormones, such as adrenaline, responsible for the fight or flight response.  Once these hormones accumulate, fat and glucose stores are released into the blood stream which, in turn, raises the levels of sugar present in the blood.  In order to prevent this from happening, it is important that a person recognizes the stress levels in his life and then try to minimize its impact. Learn to take deep breaths, or do some meditation exercises because having the ability to relax will do wonders to one’s blood sugar levels.

    • Get More Fiber in your Diet

Aside from helping in the digestive process and in easing constipation, soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol levels, and improves blood sugar levels as well. Avoid foods processed foods and those that contain refined carbohydrates. Go for foods rich in fiber such as broccoli, whole wheat breads, beans, etc.

    • Think Mediterranean

Scientists in Spain conducted a study which revealed that a diet rich in vegetables, extra virgin olive oil and fish provided remarkable results when it comes to reducing a person’s risk of diabetes.  It is recommended that a person consume two or more servings of vegetables per day, eat three servings of fish per week, and have fresh fruits for snacks and dessert.

    The Blood Pressure Miracle Review

The Blood Pressure Miracle Millions of people are literally walking time bombs because they have uncontrolled high blood pressure. If they leave it untreated, they will face serious and potentially life-threatening health consequences in the future. The trouble is, the effects of high blood pressure sneak up on most people because they don’t even know they have it! That’s why this disease is why it’s often called “The Silent Killer”.

According to the statistics, 1 out of every 4 US adults has high blood pressure. Yes, that means if you’re an adult, there’s a 25% chance you already have it. And if you are overweight, there is more than a 50% chance you have high blood pressure! Having high blood pressure leads to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney failure.

I’m not telling you this to scare the living daylights out of you…just to make you aware of the facts. This epidemic of high blood pressure is sad and unfortunate because high blood pressure is treatable.

A lot of companies and authors try to get me to promote their high blood pressure treatments to my website visitors and subscribers. It runs the gamut from drugs, to herbs, pills foods, books, stress reduction programs, hypnosis and everything else under the sun.

Most of what lands on my desk is pure junk and I immediately chuck it into the trash. Every now and then, however, I run across something that rivets my attention because it really does have the potential to help you reduce your blood pressure.

One of those resources is a book I recently read called, “The Blood Pressure Miracle” by Frank Mangano.

The program Frank developed and explains in his book is a unique, all-natural system for dropping your blood pressure that is not based on a single approach such as stress reduction, or herbs or special foods or exercise. It’s actually a combination of every method that has ever been scientifically proven to work, complied into one comprehensive lifestyle program. No doubt that’s why the program has been so successful for so many people.

Frank has a knack for simplifying complex medical concepts in a way that the regular person can understand and apply in his or her life when reading the book. In fact, probably the best part of the program is the 60-day plan that’s included in the appendix. It makes the whole program a no brainer to make a part of your daily life because Frank gives you a single change you can make to your daily routine, one day at a time. If you change the little things one at a time, they all add up and the results over the weeks and months can be astonishing.

After reading Frank’s book – which is now available as an instant download e-book – I can give it my highest recommendation. Frank also offers an unconditional, risk-free 60-day guarantee, which is very generous and shows that he has faith that his 60 day plan will lower your blood pressure or else you get your money back, it’s as simple as that.

If you think there is even a remote chance that you might have high blood pressure – and especially if you are overweight – please get it checked. Left un-treated, high blood pressure is a life or death matter.

If you’ve already been diagnosed with high blood pressure, then it’s urgent to take steps to lower it immediately. Your doctor may have immediately recommended that you go on medication. I recommend that you follow the advice of your physician to a T.

However, if you do not like the idea of staying on drugs for the rest of your life (which are very expensive and have many potential side effects), then I strongly urge to you to do some research on your own about all the natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals.

You would be surprised at how many options you have: Simple lifestyle changes, inexpensive natural supplements and even regular foods you can buy at your local grocery store have all been proven to improve heart health and reduce blood pressure. When you combine these strategies all together as in Frank’s 60-day system, the results are multiplied (and it probably explains why, if you tried a single natural remedy in the past, it did very little or nothing at all)

And did you know that many of these natural methods can also help you lose weight too?

Frank Mangano’s e-book, “The Blood Pressure Miracle” is an ideal place to begin your natural health research, and when you consider that a one year supply of Calcium Channel Blockers costs between $740 to $990 and frank’s program only costs under thirty bucks, then I think you can see that you owe it to yourself to become as educated as possible about all your options.

    Drop Your Blood Pressure

I received an interesting report from Agora Health Ltd. that you can read at the following url:

    ==> FSPOnlineRecommends

I copy below some of the more interesting points:

The high blood pressure epidemic that mainstream medicine is failing to curb for 70% of patients

More than 52,000 Americans die from complications related to high blood pressure every year. Between 1993 and 2004 the rate of death from high blood pressure rose nearly 30 percent . . . . and it’s still rising.
On a worldwide scale the numbers are even more staggering – 7.6 million people die every year as a result of high blood pressure.
Here, in the UK, more than 16 million people suffer from high blood pressure.  And according to the American Heart Association, one in three adults over the age of 20 – that’s about 65 million Americans – now have high blood pressure, affecting young and old alike.
About 25 million of them regularly take at least one prescription drug to control it.
So, you can already start to get a picture of how big the ‘blood pressure’ industry is for the phamaceutical companies.
But, according to a growing body of research, the current mainstream pharmaceutical approach is failing miserably.
A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine reports that only about 30 percent of those being treated for hypertension are “well controlled.” The other 70 percent are still in a danger zone, despite regular treatment with drugs and regular checkups with their doctors.
These are shocking statistics, and when I first discovered the true scale of the problem, I became determined that my name wouldn’t get added to these statistics.
I realized that I had to do something about it quickly or I risked losing everything . . .

A centuries-old secret now made even better using
    21st Century Science

As I said earlier, I was one of the lucky ones, because it was through my contacts at the Health Sciences Institute that I was first alerted to a remarkable natural advance developed from ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic remedies stretching back thousands of years.
The Health Sciences Institute focuses most of their research on natural treatments that are largely overlooked by the medical mainstream and the pharmaceutical companies . . . their experts get to hear about groundbreaking new medicines long before they make national headlines.
And that’s where I first heard about the work of Dr Stacey Miller . . .
Dr Miller is a Florida-based, naturopathic doctor, who after years of meticulous study of rare and unusual herbs used in ancient Chinese and Tibetan cultures had formulated a unique combination of four plant extracts:
Holly Leaf (Ilex aquifolium) –  For centuries now, holly leaf has been used as a tea in the mountains of southern China. But it is only recently that the therapeutic effect that this holly leaf can have on high blood pressure has come to the attention of modern medical science. One pharmacological study found that the herb could enhance overall blood circulation by expanding blood vessels, while also helping to diminish cholesterol. What’s more, holly leaf is a mood elevator — many people who take Alistrol notice a feeling of calm wash over them.
Daikon Seed Extract (Raphanus sativus) – ‘Daikon’ (meaning, in Japanese, ‘large root’) is a large, mild radish much esteemed in Asian cuisine, often served grated with sushi and sashimi. And, in traditional Chinese herbal medicine, radish seed is recognized as a wonderful digestive.
But modern medicine has also demonstrated that Daikon seed can help normalize blood pressure and cholesterol while improving overall cardiovascular health. Its main activity, according to the Chinese, is its ability to enhance a person’s “vital energy circulation.”
Chinese Hawthorn Fruit (Crataegus pinnatifida) – Pharmacological studies indicate that Chinese hawthorn fruit – especially the premium hawthorn found only in Alistrol  -  can improve heart function, repair heart-muscle damage, enhance blood flow by dilating heart vessels, reduce arrhythmia, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
In a recent study conducted by Reading University in the UK, scientists discovered that a daily dose of hawthorn extract taken over a 16 week period was effective in lowering blood pressure for diabetic patients.
Garlic Extract – an important ingredient that has been shown to help prevent heart disease, high cholesterol and has many other cardiovascular benefits.
Garlic not only helps reduce blood pressure, but also reduces the stickiness of the blood inside the arteries – thereby helpin to prevent the blood from clotting, which could lead to heart attack or stroke.
In another study, conducted by the Department of Biological Sciences at Kuwait University, garlic was found to influence the concentration of nitric oxide in the blood – a substance that can help reduce blood pressure by widening the arteries.
But, better still, Dr. Miller’s natural compound had even undergone a small, double-blind, placebo controlled study.  It confirmed to me that these simple herbs could help
