Omega3 Fish Oils for Better Health

We have been told to take more of it, and there’s strong evidence that Omega 3 really is crucial for our brains, hearts and immune systems.

Moreover “Fish oil may really be an ‘elixir of youth’ because of its effects on our biological ageing,” says The Daily Telegraph.

The news is based on a study measuring heart patients’ levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which can be found in fish and supplement pills. Researchers then looked at sections of the patients’ DNA called telomeres, measuring the speed of naturally occuring changes associated with ageing. The results showed that there was an association between higher omega-3 levels and a reduction in the rate at which the patients’ telomeres shortened.

While this study may shed light on the possible actions of omega-3, it did not assess whether these changes affected the health or wellbeing of the participants. This was preliminary research, and further studies are needed to see whether omega-3 fatty acids have a direct effect on telomeres.

Everyone is recommending Omega-3 fish oil these days. If you are on a low fat diet you really need to learn about these healthy fats.

The White House has asked the USDA to update its Food Guide Pyramid to recommend omega-3 “healthy fats” from fish, fish oil and flaxseed oil.

More and more doctors are recommending these good fats too.

The new guidelines from the American Heart Association have also been updated and now focus on omega 3 fish oil.

You can see below an interesting video about using Omega3  in Weight Loss Diets.

Recent Study Proves Supplements Do Work

The European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and Big Pharma may all seem to be in cahoots to veto the future of alternative medicine and the use of natural remedies but one study from down-under brings hope for all of us. Australian researchers, from the University of Western Sydney, have found that herbal preparations and omega-3s are effective treatments against an array of illnesses including osteoarthritis, heart disease and depression. Best yet, the study also found that these treatments could save Australia more than $220m every year!

Over the past few weeks, you’ve heard a lot of doom and gloom about the future of natural remedies and alternative medicine — especially in Europe.

While we mustn’t stop our efforts to campaign against the outrageous measures threatening our freedom to make our own health choices, there is a tiny spark of light at the end of this dark tunnel.

The European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and Big Pharma may all seem to be in cahoots to veto the future of alternative medicine and the use of natural remedies but one study from down-under brings hope for all of us.

Complementary treatments effective against an array of illnesses

Australian researchers, from the University of Western Sydney, have found that herbal preparations and omega-3s are effective treatments against an array of illnesses including osteoarthritis, heart disease and depression. Best yet, the study also found that these treatments could save Australia more than $220m every year!

Now, I don’t know about you, but in my eyes, $220m is a massive saving especially when we are in the midts of a global economic down-turn and governments around the world are making huge cut-backs to essential services such as healthcare.

In 2009, the Australian National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NICM) commissioned researchers to undertake a series of studies involving complementary medicine interventions. These included:

  • Acupuncture for chronic low back pain;
  • St John’s wort for ‘mild’ to ‘moderate’ depression;
  • Omega-3 fish oils for secondary prevention of heart disease;
  • Omega-3 fish oils to reduce non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drug use in rheumatoid arthritis; and
  • A proprietary herbal medicine for pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis.

With so many weight loss programs out on the market and on the internet today, what makes this program any different than all the rest?

Before we get to the program, let’s take a look at the expert program developer.  Isabel De Los Rios is a nutrition and exercise specialist with 10 years of experience helping clients reach their ideal weight and tackle conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol. Isabel has a very extensive educational background in nutrition and exercise physiology. Her personal experience with her own weight struggles and her mother’s severe diabetes led her search for the BEST nutrition information available today. The Diet Solution Program is a result of her 15 year study and research.

    Metabolic Page

I’ve also talked to Isabel about her training and education background, and I’ll be honest, it was impressive, unlike other so-called “health experts”, who are just following main stream nutrition programs. Isabel provides her readers with the truth: the facts most people have never taken the time to research, read and decipher.

Plus, Isabel has been a nutrition and exercise specialist for the past 10 years and has personally worked with hundreds of clients in her own private facility, overseeing successful weight loss programs. This strong hands on experience with real people solidified the facts and principles she had learned in books, journals and from other health professionals. The proof was really in the results of real people.

In fact, Isabel’s articles are pretty radical when it comes to her nutrition principles which is why her approach works when main-stream nutrition fails. So if you are looking for the same old nutrition theories taught in every other book and program on the market today, this is not what the program provides.

Now one of the biggest questions about the program is simply, “What is The Diet Solution Program?” Well according to Isabel, it is the most comprehensive and detailed nutrition manual available on the market today. Not only does it teach you exactly what principles you need to follow to finally reach your ideal weight, it gives you the meal plans, shopping lists and recipes to do so. It does not push some extreme, unreasonable way to lose weight.and  it actually teaches you how you can easily change your lifestyle with this healthy way of eating. And if you have ever attempted to lose weight in the past, you know that the only way to maintain it is to make it a way of life. The best part about Isabel’s program is that this new way of life is not some torturous eating regimen. She really shows you that you can eat delicious food, combined the right way, to lose weight and maintain your target weight.

One of the best side effects of the whole program is the increased health and vitality that every participant experiences. Decreases in blood sugar levels, lowered cholesterol, increased energy, elimination of digestive discomfort and cleared skin conditions are just some of the few benefits other people have already experienced.

Now realize that some effort from you will be required, but Isabel has really done all the hard work for you. Included in her program is:

    • Step by step action steps telling you exactly how to put the principles in place
    • Detailed daily meal plans that make everyday eating easy
    • Shopping Lists to make food shopping a snap
    • Delicious Recipes to make everyday meals tasty

The manual is comprehensive. Jam packed with incredible and valuable information. But you don’t need to wait to get through the whole thing before you can start. You can use Isabel’s Quick Start Guide to start the program ASAP. Some people have even just used the quick start guide and lost 10-15lbs in a little as 6 weeks.

    The Diet Solution Program

The Diet Solution Program is not just another weight loss scheme or extreme diet. It is truly a practical way to lose weight and enjoy a lifetime of health. The Diet Solution Program is perfect for people who have struggled with their weight their whole life and are sick and tired of programs that just don’t work long term. The DSP is also perfect for people who want to take control of their health and reverse health conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease.

If you’re in the slightest bit curious, I recommend you look closely at Isabel’s program. I was very impressed with all of The Diet Solution Program meal plans, the bonuses, the guarantee, and Isabel’s expertise. For the money, it’s the best deal in the weight loss industry – so much better than diet pills! And remember…

Isabel De Los Rios’s The Diet Solution Program is backed by a 90 day money back guarantee. And this is a real guarantee… if you are not completely satisfied, you will receive your money back, no “ifs,” “ands,” or “buts.” So you really have nothing to lose.

Hispanics in the U.S., live on average over two years longer than whites, and over seven years longer than blacks.

A recent government report contains the strongest evidence yet of what some call the “Hispanic paradox” — remarkable longevity in a population with many poor and undereducated members. One theory holds that Hispanics who immigrate to the U.S. tend to be among the healthiest from their countries.

    According to the Chicago Tribune:
“A Hispanic born in 2006 could expect to live about 80 years and seven months, the government estimates. Life expectancy for a white is about 78, and for a black, just shy of 73 years.”

    Sources:

    Dr. Mercola’s Comments:
According to a recently released life expectancy report by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there are significant disparities between ethnic groups in America.

Hispanics living in the US outlive Caucasians by more than two years. African Americans lag even further behind. Their life expectancy is more than seven years shorter than Hispanics, at just under 73 years, compared to Hispanics’ life expectancy of nearly 81 years.

But the so-called “Hispanic paradox” that the Chicago Tribune mentions may not be such a mystery after all, if you look at what drives longevity in the first place.

Can Money Buy You Health and Longevity?

Conventional wisdom tells us that populations with more money and higher educational status live longer. And there’s plenty of evidence to support this.

The “Hispanic paradox” refers to the curious fact that despite having such a large portion of poor and undereducated members (three times as many Hispanics live below the poverty level compared with Caucasians), the Hispanic community still outlives the wealthier and more educated Caucasian population.

    According to the Chicago Tribune,
“A leading theory is that Hispanics who manage to immigrate to the U.S. are among the healthiest from their countries.

… An estimated 40 percent of them are immigrants, who in some cases arrived after arduous journeys to do taxing manual labor.

… However, experts say that immigrant hardiness diminishes within a couple of generations of living here. Many believe it’s because the children of immigrants take up smoking, fast-food diets and other habits blamed for wrecking the health of other ethnic populations.”
I’d say they more or less hit the nail on the head with that last statement.

First generation American Hispanics live longer because they’re eating a FAR more natural diet, and they’re typically far more physically active than Americans in general.

But it only takes a generation or two to lose many of the healthful customs that are the cornerstones of good health.

These statistics really speak to the power of an unprocessed diet and an active lifestyle. What good does money do if you spend a majority of it on denatured, chemical-laden, processed foods?

It’s quite clear that eating a diet consisting of high amounts of processed foods will shorten your life, yet 90 percent of the money Americans spend on food is spent on processed food, and the number one source of calories in the US comes from high fructose corn syrup – a staple ingredient in nearly all processed foods, from frozen dinners, to condiments, snacks, and soda.

Hispanics, in general, tend to have strong culinary customs, where food is cooked from scratch with fresh ingredients, and I strongly believe this is a major part of the equation. I have advocated a return to home cooking for years now, because I believe it’s one of the most effective ways to improve your health and extend your life.

Want to Live Longer? Eat Natural Foods!

The concept of “native diets” being superior to the processed diets of the modern, Western world goes back nearly 100 years.

Dr. Weston A. Price was a dentist and dental researcher around 1900 who went on an investigation that spanned the globe to determine why native populations, who ate traditional foods, exhibited perfect physical health well into old age.

What he discovered, and wrote about in depth in his classic book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, was that as populations adopted industrially processed foods, veering away from natural fare, their health started to decline.

Modern food processing  actually began in the early part of 1800, when vacuum bottling was invented, followed by tinning and canning technology in 1810. Back then, lead-containing cans wrought health problems on those who consumed it.

In 1862, pasteurization was discovered, and with it came the destruction of one of Earth’s most nutritious food groups – raw dairy. The major shift toward a diet consisting of more processed food occurred in the 1920′s, right around the time Dr. Price published his book.

Price’s research took him to remote tribal communities — Swiss, Eskimos, Polynesians, Africans, New Zealanders, and more — and what he discovered made him one of the foremost authorities on the role of foods in their natural form, and the development of degenerative illnesses as a result of processed foods. (For more information about Price and details of his research, please see this link.)

Clearly, the Western diet has deteriorated significantly since then. More denaturing and harmful food processing methods have followed, and we’re seeing the ramifications of this unnatural food culture in our skyrocketing disease statistics.

How We’re Breeding a Diseased Future Generation

It’s easy to understand how the younger generations get lured into thinking that processed food is “regular food.” After all, that’s what most kids are surrounded by and grow up with.

But processed, pre-packaged foods and fast food restaurants of today are actually radically different from real food.

Unless this misconception is corrected, and soon, the disease trends we’re now seeing are only going to get worse as much of the processed foods consumed today are not even food-based! That’s right, some processed foods and snacks are little more than a mish-mash of chemicals created in a lab, with no perceivable expiration date.

This is a serious problem, not only short term for the person who consumes these foods, but for the generations to come.

Researchers have now discovered that genetic mutations and malfunctions that cause disease are created in future generations when consuming highly processed and artificial foods.

Poor Diet and Disease Cannot Be Un-Linked

There aren’t many mysteries when it comes to health and disease, and once you start seeing how everything is interconnected, you’ll also see that nearly every disease can be traced back to the foods you’ve chosen to eat.

For example, many people do not realize the connections between diet, obesity, and other diseases such as heart disease or cancer.

Taking cancer as an example, obese women are up to 60 percent more likely to develop some form of cancer than normal-weight women, and obese women are also far more likely to have babies with genetic defects.

One of the links between obesity and certain forms of cancer is estrogen.

Breast cancer, for example, is typically fueled by estrogen, and this hormone is produced in your fat tissue. Hence, the more body fat you have, the more estrogen you’re likely to produce, which could contribute to the formation of breast cancer.

Tracing this issue back to its roots: obesity is directly attributable to your diet, and fast food, high in trans fats and sugar, is a major contributor to obesity…

Yet how often do you hear health officials talk about the need for a raw, whole, organic diet when addressing rising cancer rates?

    Virtually never!

If you want to do something about your state of health, you simply MUST become conscious about your food selections.

    • Are you eating real, unadulterated foods, or are you eating chemical concoctions, pressed and mashed and artificially flavored to give the appearance of being food?
    • Are you eating foods that are loaded with antibiotics and hormones?
    • Are you eating foods that contain ingredients that are genetically modified to pull double-duty as pesticides?

These are important questions that will only become more important as time goes on and public health continues to decline.

The Healthy Ingredients of Native Diets

What makes Dr. Price’s work so incredible is that even though it was written in 1920, it is still equally valid today. That is one of the signs of a health truth: it lasts for many years. If it was true in 1920 it should still hold true when 2020 rolls around.

Dr. Price noticed some similarities between the native diets that allowed the people to thrive.
    Among them:

    • The foods were natural, unprocessed, and organic (and contained no sugar except for the occasional bit of honey or maple syrup).
    • The people ate foods that grew in their native environment. In other words, they ate locally grown, seasonal foods.
    • Many of the cultures ate unpasteurized dairy products, and all of them ate fermented foods.
    • The people ate a significant portion of their food raw.
    • All of the cultures ate animal products, including animal fat and, often, full-fat butter and organ meats.

When he analyzed his findings, he found that the native diets contained ten times the amount of fat-soluble vitamins, and at least four times the amount of calcium, other minerals, and water-soluble vitamins as that of Western diets at that time.

Their diets were also rich in enzymes because they ate fermented and raw foods (enzymes help you to digest cooked foods), and their intake of omega-3 fats was at least ten times higher than in today’s diet.

How to Survive in a Diseased Health Paradigm

Even though we live lives that are far different from those of our ancestors, you can still benefit from their traditional diets by using them as dependable roadmaps to good health.

By implementing the native dietary patterns listed above, you too can improve or maintain optimal health. However, modern life has also removed us from many other natural, health-promoting lifestyle patterns that need to be addressed.

Here is a summary of the most important and most effective dietary and lifestyle measures I know of:

Following these guidelines is a powerful way to avoid premature aging and disease of all kinds, so that you can far exceed the U.S. national average life expectancy, regardless of your financial- and educational status, or your racial heritage.

Get the Best from the Grapevine Today

Your anti-aging ‘wonder’ silently attacks free radicals, while you enjoy
a life of energy and vitality.*

Some Harvard-educated researchers believe they’ve discovered a proverbial ‘fountain of youth’.*

They’re talking about resveratrol, calling it a miracle ingredient, and the greatest discovery since antibiotics.*

Resveratrol is a compound found in the skin and seeds of grapes.

Researchers have been mystified for years about how the French can smoke cigarettes and eat high-fat foods, yet still have extremely low rates of cancer and heart disease. They call it the French paradox.

Harvard researchers Dr. Christoph Westphal and David Sinclair conducted genetic research to investigate the French paradox.

Until now, scientists believed drinking red wine had health benefits*… but couldn’t put their finger on exactly why.

Now they believe the resveratrol in wine activates cells into behaving more youth-like in a number of ways.*

The biggest hurdle with resveratrol is finding a way to consume the large concentrations required to provide you with a benefit. You’d need several bottles of wine per day to get the anticipated benefit from resveratrol. Drinking large amounts of wine or other alcoholic beverages will increase your insulin levels, which will eventually have a negative impact on your health in a number of ways.

I’ll tell you in a minute how you can get your highly-concentrated resveratrol without the alcohol, sugars and calories of red wine.

But first, let’s discuss how to control your free radical levels…

      Neutralizing the Free Radical Threat

Every day of your life you face exposure to dangerous free radicals. No matter how healthy a lifestyle you lead or how healthy your diet is, this is simply a fact of life.

Fortunately this is not all bad – as your normal bodily functions (breathing, metabolism, and physical activity) naturally generate free radicals. Your immune system also generates free radicals to help neutralize viruses and bacteria.

But some free radicals are the result of environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, pesticides, and cigarette smoking.

The problem starts when these free radicals attack your healthy cells and cause them to weaken and become more susceptible to health disorders. Plus, this can also have a profound effect on how you age.

      sidebar

An All Natural Source of Resveratrol

Purple Defense contains 50 mg of Resveratrol per serving.

With an overall 3,500 ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value per capsule, Purple Defense capsules provide a powerful natural antioxidant blend.

The ORAC value for Purple Defense is achieved by using the most sophisticated and accurate equipment possible. The machine is a fluorescence microplate reader (Fluoroskan Ascent FL).

ORAC values can easily be inflated with any machine though. Using an ethanol solvent will artificially inflate the ORAC value. That’s why each batch is testing using an acetone/water solvent. So you can rest assured that you’re actually getting 3,500 in each dose.

      sidebar

But as part of normal functioning, your body is capable of keeping free radicals in check and naturally neutralizing them, unless you…

      • Eat a diet consisting mostly of processed junk food
      • Cut corners on getting enough sleep on a daily basis
      • Ignore your need for regular exercise
      • Find yourself under a great deal of stress
      • Expose yourself to a high number of environmental free radicals

Exposing your body to these types of conditions may overwhelm it with free radicals and cause damage.

Plus, free radical damage accumulates with age. So, the longer your lifestyle and environment expose you to this damage, the greater your consequences as you age… the greater potential consequences to your overall aging process.

      So what can you do?

Well, first of all, it would be helpful to address the unhealthy habits listed above.

Additionally, consider going the next step and find ways to fortify your healthy diet with antioxidant rich food.

I’m sure you’re well aware of the benefits of antioxidants from all the discussion on my site. I’ve spent literally decades researching this topic and cannot stress their importance to you enough.

Antioxidants provide your body with natural protection against free radicals and help you neutralize and keep them under control.

Why Organic Food is Your Best Choice
      for Natural Free Radical Protection

grapesThere are many sources of antioxidants available to help boost your health.

Most of these sources come directly from consumption of high quality, fresh, organic and preferably locally grown vegetables and fruits. But there is a catch.

The catch is that, to get the most potent antioxidant content from the fruits and vegetables – they need to be organically grown and processed.

      Here’s why.

Research shows that certain organically grown fruits and vegetables have significantly higher levels of potent antioxidants than traditionally grown foods.

The key to all this is a large family of natural antioxidant compounds called polyphenols.

Polyphenols exist in plant floods and their contribution to the antioxidant capacity of the human diet is much larger than even that of vitamins.

And a subclass of this antioxidant-rich family found in fruits and vegetables is flavonoids.

In response to environmental stressors like insects and other competing plants, plants produce flavonoids with potent antioxidant activity.

Unfortunately, conventional growing methods that use pesticides and herbicides hamper the production of flavonoids.

Plants exposed to pesticides and herbicides have less of a need to produce such compounds. And therefore, these plants produce fewer antioxidants than organically grown food.

You don’t want to miss out on polyphenol flavonoids because they can:

      • Improve your memory and concentration
      • Boost the effectiveness of vitamin C in your antioxidant network
      • Regulate nitric oxide – a potent free radical that regulates your blood flow
      • Help promote your healthy heart
      • Bolster your immune system

So, to take advantage of the highest potency flavonoids and rich antioxidants, always choose organically grown fruits and vegetables.

Fresh organic foods are important not only for what they give you, higher levels of antioxidants and nutrients, but also for what they don’t give you… exposure to pesticides, herbicides, and non-organic fertilizers.

Now let’s take a closer look at some common and not so common food sources of antioxidants – keeping in mind that for you to receive the highest antioxidant potential, organic is best.

      Vitamin D Could Prevent Cancer

      Vitamin D

I found another interesting article on vitamin D on the Mercola.com website and I have copied it below for your convenience.

The Stunning Effect of This Single Vitamin on CANCER…

      Posted By Dr. Mercola | August 06 2011 | 278,800 views

vitamin D for cancer cureBy Dr. Joseph Mercola
What if a cure for cancer has been right here all along? What if the very agency charged with protecting your health is the one keeping you from that cure?

A Lawless, Rogue Agency Out of Control

Ten years ago a former New York State assemblyman, Daniel Haley, wrote a scathing exposé on how the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) systematically shuts the door on effective and non-toxic products, many for cancer.

The FDA is the chief agency in charge of protecting and promoting Americans’ health and safety. But in 10 stunning, true stories in his book, “The Politics of Healing,” Haley describes how the FDA has suppressed and banned natural health cures – eight of them for cancer. He later wrote about two additional cancer cures that worked, which the FDA also disallowed.

The FDA even admitted that one of these treatments, discovered by Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski, was successful with some of the most incurable forms of cancer. I shared this with you in a recent article that showed his film, but stories like this are far too common, and you can’t help but wonder how many people have died while the FDA denied them cancer treatments that work.

Haley brazenly calls the FDA a rogue, out of control agency that has lied in Congressional testimonies, deliberately falsified data, and destroyed evidence to prohibit cures like Burzynki’s from coming to market. The FDA’s loyalties are to the drug industry, not to individuals, Haley says.

His claims mirror those of Dr. David Graham, who once worked in the FDA’s Office of Drug Safety. In 2004 Dr. Graham blew the whistle on six drugs that were harming people, including Vioxx, but instead of acting on his warnings, Graham’s superiors pulled him off his job. He fought back in a PBS television special when he told how he’d been chastised at the FDA for thinking the FDA served the public. The “FDA is there to serve the drug industry,” Graham said his supervisors told him.

‘Virtually Every’ Drug Company Now Targeting Cancer Therapies

Today, the FDA continues to serve its client, Big Pharma, by making sure that toxic chemotherapy, along with surgery and radiation, are the only cancer treatment options legally available to you. This industry is huge, with 139 cancer treatment drugs in the pipeline just for women alone. All told there are over 900 experimental cancer therapies under investigation. No wonder so many pharmaceutical companies are ramping up their cancer drug research!

According to the New York Times:
“Virtually every large pharmaceutical company seems to have discovered cancer, and a substantial portion of the smaller biotechnology companies are focused on it as well. Together, the companies are pouring billions of dollars into developing cancer drugs.”
Note they said drugs, not cures. That’s because this industry isn’t set up for a cure, even though they say that’s what they’re looking for. It’s also why economic forecasts predict 20 million new cancers by 2025, with the $50 billion-a-year cancer treatment business increasing by 15 percent a year. Pfizer alone projects its annual cancer drug returns will be $11 billion by 2018.

      The Truth about Vitamin D

Everyone’s talking about vitamin D right now, especially since the Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) updated their recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for it. The truth is that most Americans are deficient in vitamin D, and studies show that vitamin D supplementation can both prevent and kill many infections and diseases, including cancer.

Vitamin D isn’t actually a vitamin, although scientists refer to it as such. It’s actually a steroid hormone that you get from sun exposure, food sources and/or supplementation. The term refers to either vitamin D2 or D3, but according to the National Vitamin D Council, D3 (chemical name 25-hydroxy vitamin D) is real vitamin D, and is the same substance produced naturally through your skin by sun exposure.

Older research appears at odds on whether your body cares which form of D it’s getting. But a study in the January 2011 Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that D3 is 87 percent more effective than D2, and is the preferred form for treating vitamin D deficiency. It’s measured in international units (IU’s) in nanograms per milliliter, or ng/mL. The Vitamin D Council believes that a person’s D3 levels should be at least 50 ng/mLfor your body to function properly. (To determine whether you might be deficient, you need to get your vitamin D levels tested, and ideally, you’ll want to get tested regularly thereafter to ensure you’re maintaining optimal levels year-round.)

Fourteen famous vitamin D researchers gave the FNB this information, but the FNB apparently ignored the information that the researchers presented because their “updated” RDA levels ended up being so pitifully low that it’s doubtful it can significantly impact Americans’ deficiency, let alone fight off diseases like cancer and heart disease.

Experts Protest ‘Impossible’ New RDA Levels

Depending on your age, the new recommendations are 600 to 800 IUs a day for adults and between zero and 600 IUs a day for children. The FNB also said that taking vitamin D in amounts of 10,000 IUs or more could be dangerous – but that’s ridiculous, seeing that a 30-minute dose of sunshine can give an adult more than 10,000 IUs! Since countless studies indicate that much higher levels of vitamin D are required for optimal health, it’s no surprise that experts lost no time denouncing the FNB’s recommendations.
“It’s almost impossible to significantly raise your vitamin D levels when supplementing (at the FNB levels),” the Vitamin D Council posted on its website.

Hidden Agendas and Conflicts of Interest

Suspecting that conflicts of interest and hidden agendas played a part in this, the Vitamin D Council filed Freedom of Information (FOIA) requests so they could examine the FNB’s notes on the process. They’re still waiting on an answer, but I’m wondering if it doesn’t have something to do with the fact that over 1,350 clinical trials on vitamin D are currently being conducted by major drug companies, all based on the prevention or cure of many illnesses and diseases, including 388 for cancer.

      Yes, cancer.

From breast to prostate, to colorectal to brain cancers, and even basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer), Drug companies such as Pfizer and Merck are currently either sponsoring or collaborating on clinical trials based on the premise that vitamin D administered orally, intravenously or topically (for skin cancer) may either prevent or cure cancer. Cancer foundations and institutes are all in on the clinical study game as well, such as the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health. Even the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Veteran Affairs are studying ways to prevent and cure cancer with vitamin D!

What’s really interesting is that several of these studies are using vitamin D in amounts of 50,000 IUs a day or more – which flies strongly in the face of the FNB’s claims that self-supplementing with 10,000 could be dangerous to your health. Since recent studies show that supplements of up to 40,000 IUs a day don’t appear to be toxic, and that doses as low as 400 IUs a day are too low to even maintain skeletal health, let alone prevent cancer,

The FDA’s Definition of Drug vs. Supplement

Over 800 studies already show that vitamin D could have cancer-prevention and/or treatment possibilities. But the problem is that it’s a natural substance that can’t be patented as a simple supplement, meaning there’s no real revenue in it, compared to a prescription brand drug. That’s why many drug studies involving vitamins of any kind hinge on how the FDA defines drugs and supplements.

A drug is defined as a product meant for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of a disease. A supplement is defined as a product that is meant to simply “supplement” or “enhance” a normal diet within the daily allowances recommended by the FDA. Drugs – and retailers who sell supplements are not allowed to tell you that vitamin D can possibly “prevent, mitigate or cure” cancer without having the FDA accuse them of selling a drug that hasn’t been approved through the proper FDA process.

Again, Follow the Money if You Want to Know the Truth

That process of getting a drug to market costs an average $359 million and takes nearly 10 years– with a good portion of the money going directly to the FDA through user fees. Over the years these fees have become a major funding source for the FDA. What drug companies get in return is faster FDA reviews and drug approvals.

As a result, a kind of you-scratch-my-back-I’ll-scratch-yours scenario has ensued, with drug companies maintaining major leverage over the FDA when it comes to protecting their revenue sources, including making sure the $60 billion-a-year supplement business doesn’t get in the way of drug sales. The history of FDA laws and regulations on file at Harvard Law School, explains how years ago an FDA task force long ago established this policy
“… to ensure that the presence of dietary supplements on the market does not act as a disincentive to drug development.”<
So how does this relate to too-low RDA levels for vitamin D?

A look at the clinical trials shows that most of them involve “high-potency” D3 supplements, which puts them in the drug category if it turns out they can mitigate, treat or cure cancer. And that means they can be patented – and sold to you as prescriptions at sky-high prices.

Drug Companies Are Elbowing Their Way into Your Healthcare Plan

Another way that Big Pharma has moved in on the cancer industry is through pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), which administer drug benefits for about 95 percent of all patients with prescription drug coverage. PBMs decide which drugs flow through the healthcare system. Supposedly they choose the best drugs and prices for your plan. But what if I told you that the businesses that sell the drugs have been helping to decide which drugs your PBM pays for?

Regulators have been working hard to nip conflicts of interest in the bud, but over the years numerous court cases have shown that drug companies and PBMs working together has led to higher prices and limited drug choices – and allegations of price-setting through secret deals with pharmaceutical companies.

Official Agencies Wedded to Toxic Chemotherapy

I have an employee who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. After her mastectomy, she was told she had several months of chemotherapy and radiation ahead of her. But she sought a second opinion at a renowned cancer treatment center – and learned that chemotherapy was NOT going to be part of her treatment plan because her type of cancer doesn’t respond to chemotherapy.
      >“And since chemo is poison, why would we want to poison you for no reason?” the oncologist told her.
That’s right – a person in the business of “selling” cancer treatment actually said he wasn’t going to poison her “for no reason” – something I consider unusual in an industry that is wedded to toxic chemotherapy. The employee was pronounced cancer-free four months later, without chemo or radiation, which may leave you wondering, as it did me, how many patients die every year from toxic chemotherapy they got but didn’t need?

Some experts believe that as much as 25 percent, or more, of patients who undergo chemotherapy are killed by it. Dr. Vincent Speckhart, a former U.S. Air Force flight surgeon and oncologist, was so concerned about deaths from chemo that he told a Congressional committee:
“After 13 years of using FDA-approved chemotherapy protocols, I concluded that such therapies were extremely toxic, poorly tolerated, and not effective in prolonging survival in most solid tumors of adults. In 1983, my patients began to request therapies other than chemotherapy. I agreed, and without even knowing it, I became an ‘alternative practitioner’ and was red-flagged by opponents of this form of therapy.”
In other words, if you’re a physician who divorces the status quo of cancer treatment, you’d better watch out. In his book, Haley talks about how this “gross government intrusion into the healing arts,” costs thousands – and perhaps millions – of lives and facilitates the drug industry by squelching people like Dr. Speckhart and Burzynski.

Arm Yourself with Knowledge to Protect Your Healthcare Freedom

It doesn’t help that the FDA as well as other “official cancer medicine” agencies have a swinging door of employees going back forth between the agency and Big Pharma to work. In a new book, “National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society: Criminal Indifference to Cancer Prevention and Conflicts of Interest,” former Cancer Prevention Coalition president Dr. Samuel S. Epstein shows just how bad the conflicts are.

Quoting former NCI director Samuel Broder, Epstein says “the NCI has become a government pharmaceutical company.” And the ACS, Epstein says, is more interested in “accumulating wealth than saving lives.” With close ties to cancer treatment businesses, the ACS has a track record that “clearly reflects conflicts of interest” when it comes to cancer treatment policies and prevention strategies, Epstein alleges.

And so it goes… So, what you can do to protect yourself from getting cancer, or what can you do if you already have it? The good news is that knowledge is power, and there are things you can do for yourself, right now, not to only to prevent cancer, but to make sure you have the right cancer treatment if you do get it.

Because cancer is almost wholly a man-made disease, it’s especially important to recognize that you do have power over many things that could cause you to get cancer. Taking control of your health will put you in a position to make the best health decisions possible if you do get cancer.

Here’s a list to get you started on a cancer prevention plan:

      1. Normalize your vitamin D levels with safe amounts of sun exposure. This works primarily by optimizing your vitamin D level. Ideally, monitor your vitamin D levels throughout the year.
      2. Control your insulin levels by limiting your intake of processed foods and sugars/fructose as much as possible.
      3. Get appropriate amounts of animal-based omega-3 fats.
      4. Get appropriate exercise. One of the primary reasons exercise works is that it drives your insulin levels down. Controlling insulin levels is one of the most powerful ways to reduce your cancer risks.
      5. Eat according to your nutritional type. The potent anti-cancer effects of this principle are very much underappreciated. When we treat cancer patients in our clinic this is one of the most powerful anti-cancer strategies we have.
      6. Have a tool to permanently erase the neurological short-circuiting that can activate cancer genes. Even the CDC states that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotions. It is likely that this factor may be more important than all the other physical ones listed here, so make sure this is addressed. My particular favorite tool for this purpose, as you may know, is the Emotional Freedom Technique.
      7. Only 25 percent of people eat enough vegetables, so by all means eat as many vegetables as you are comfortable with. Ideally, they should be fresh and organic. Cruciferous vegetables in particular have been identified as having potent anti-cancer properties. Remember that carb nutritional types may need up to 300 percent more vegetables than protein nutritional types.
      8. Maintain an ideal body weight.
      9. Get enough high-quality sleep.
      10. Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners and air pollution.
      11. Reduce your use of cell phones and other wireless technologies, and implement as many safety strategies as possible if/when you cannot avoid their use.
      12. Boil, poach or steam your foods, rather than frying or charbroiling them.

You also can help by voicing your opposition to the FDA’s censorship of alternative cancer treatments by sending a letter to your Congressional representatives and asking them to support H.R. 1364, a bill to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act concerning the distribution of information on legitimate scientific research in connection with foods and dietary supplements. Call or write your Congressman now, and stop the censorship of your right to alternative cancer therapies and possibly a cure.

      Best Supplements for Weight Loss

I read recently an interesting article at http://www.theloseweightdiet.com/weight-loss-supplements.html which discusses this subject and I want to summarize the main point.

The best and safer supplements for weight loss are the following:

      a) Fish Oil. You know how there’s “good” fat and “bad” fat? Well, fish oil contains the omega 3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are the VERY BEST fats. The omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil have been scientifically proven to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes, lower blood pressure, decrease inflammation and joint stiffness, and treat various mood disorders. Fish oil has also been shown to either help improve or prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, depression, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, hyperactivity, ADHD and more. It will also help your body to lose fat, build & maintain muscle, recover from exercise, etc. just a little bit better. It also provides It also provides an improved insulin sensitivity and calorie partitioning (meaning calories would be more likely to be used for something useful rather than get stored on your body as fat).

      b) Protein Powder. It is useful for weight loss because it is satiating and is also a requirement for maintaining muscle. Your goal might be “weight” loss, but it’s really fat that you’re looking to lose, not muscle. Ensuring you eat enough protein each day is key in preventing muscle loss. While you should get the majority of your protein intake from high protein foods (chicken, fish, turkey, lean meats, egg whites, etc.), protein powder is a quick, simple, convenient way to ensure you get enough protein each day.

      c) Multivitamin. t sort of works as your diet’s backup plan. That’s exactly why I take one. My diet is quite good. I eat better and healthier than most of the population. But, I still love the idea of taking a multivitamin each day to serve as my little nutrition insurance policy making sure my body gets everything it needs everyday. In order to lose weight, we need to be alive, healthy and functioning properly. If a multivitamin contains the things our bodies need to help make this happen, then it indirectly helps make weight loss happen.

Stroke, or brain attack, is the 3rd leading cause of mortality in the United States.  Each year, over 140,000 Americans die because of stroke, and 500,000 people are left temporarily or permanently disable.  The condition is primarily caused by the absence of blood flowing to the brain, depriving the organ of its much needed oxygen and nutrients.

Deficient vitamin D levels increases stroke risk twice over in white people, but not in blacks.    This is according to a team of researchers coming from Johns Hopkins.  Vitamin D is an essential nutrient obtained from the rays of the sun as well as in various food sources.

      Vitamin D and Stroke

According to the researchers, their research findings supports evidence obtained from previous studies at Johns Hopkins, associating vitamin D insufficiency to higher death rates, cardiovascular diseases and the development of peripheral artery diseases in most adults.  The findings will be presented at the yearly Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association, to be held on November 15 in Chicago.

The research team from Johns Hopkins said that the results of the study failed to explain the reason behind high stroke rates among African Americans, who are obviously expected to have insufficient levels of vitamin D because of their dark skin pigment.  The dark pigmentation present in the skin of African Americans blocks the rays of the sun which is an important source of vitamin D. The study involved 176 participants who died because of stroke in a period of 14 years, 60 of whom were black, and 116 participants were white.  Nonetheless, African Americans are 65% more likely to suffer from severe bleeding in the brain, or a disruption of blood flowing to the brain compared to whites, when vitamin D insufficiency, age and other known stroke risk factors were included in the analysis.

Dr. Erin Michos, M.H.S., a co-lead investigator of the study, said that higher rates for diabetes and hypertension explain why black people have excess stroke risk in contrast to whites.  But the 65 percent risk is far too much, Michos emphasized.  She thinks that there might be other reasons behind the said problem but deficits in vitamin D is not one of them.  She further reiterated that vitamin D deficiency should not be blamed for the high rates of stroke among black people.

Almost 8,000 primarily healthy women and men of both races were included in the recent study, which is actually a part of a bigger, national health status evaluation that is in progress.  The researchers evaluated the risk of death due to stroke between people who have high amounts of vitamin D to those with the lowest vitamin D levels in their blood.  Data revealed that 32.3% of black people and 6.6% of whites possessed very low levels of vitamin D in their blood – which as not more than 15 ng/ml.

Furthermore, Dr. Michos said that the probable explanation for this is that blacks may have adapted to the chronic deficiency in vitamin D which is already present for generations. There is no need, therefore, to increase the levels of vitamin D in blacks in order to equate with the vitamin’s levels in whites just to lessen stroke risk. She advised that the recorded mortality rate of blacks due to stroke may not be statistically sufficient to associate it with deficient vitamin D.

The study was funded by the P.J. Schafer Cardiovascular Research Fund and the American College of Cardiology.

Why do we need vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that helps in the absorption and breakdown of phosphorus and calcium.  Phosphorus is needed for the maintenance of healthy teeth and bones as well as for energy metabolism and maintaining the balance of acids and bases in the body.  Calcium, on one hand, is important in constructing, forming and maintaining teeth and bones. So this explains why deficient levels of vitamin D can affect the levels of Phosphorus and Calcium in the body.

Aside from its important function in maintaining healthy bones, vitamin D has an important role in the preventing the growth of abnormal cells and in strengthening the immune system. Insufficient levels of vitamin D have been linked to higher rates of depression and breast cancer, especially among the elderly.

Previous studies have been conducted with regards to the health benefits of vitamin D.  Here are some examples:

      • According to scientists from Children’s Hospital Boston, Massachusetts General Hospital and University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, vitamin D may be an essential way to boost the immune system from conditions like the common cold.
      • The director of the Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Center of the Oregon Health and Science University, Dennis Bourdette, said that vitamin D may decrease the risk of multiple sclerosis.
      • A study involving 3000 European men, with ages ranging from 40 to 79 years, revealed that vitamin D may play a role in maintaining brain health, especially on the later part of life.
      • In a research conducted at Georgia, USA’s Medical College, results revealed that vitamin D is possibly associated to the maintenance of a healthy weight.
      • Vitamin D can also reduce the frequency and severity of asthma symptoms, and reduce the possibility of asthma-induced hospitalizations.  This is according to a study conducted by the researchers of Harvard Medical School after they have monitored 616 children located in Costa Rica.
      • Women with high risk of rheumatoid arthritis can also benefit from vitamin D.

      Sources of Vitamin D

Dr. Michos suggests that people should make sure that they maintain healthy levels of vitamin D by the regular intake of fish such as tuna and salmon.  She also recommends daily sun exposure for brief periods to take advantage of the sun’s ultraviolet light which produces vitamin D. 10-15 minutes of sun exposure is advised.

Some of the top healthy sources of vitamin D are:

      • Salmon
      • Tuna
      • Cod Liver Oil
      • Mushrooms
      • Oatmeal
      • Sweet Potatoes
      • Dandelion Greens
      • Egg Yolks

      Magnesium Benefits

      Magnesium Benefits

I found an interesting article by Dr. Mark Stengler about Magnesium benefits and I have re-published it below for your convenience.

      The Miracle of Magnesium

One patient had muscle cramps. Another had headaches. And a third had an irregular heartbeat. These were vastly different medical conditions, and yet the solution that I recommended for each patient was the same. You may be surprised to find that the remedy was none other than magnesium. It helped each of these patients—and did so quickly.

      Magnesium Benefits

Few nutrients possess the remarkable and diverse benefits of magnesium. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in cells after calcium, phosphorus and potassium. Magnesium is found in our bones… muscles… blood… and other tissues. It is needed by the body for energy production… fat and protein synthesis… muscle relaxation… nervous system function… and calcium metabolism.

According to US Department of Agriculture data, two out of every three Americans don’t meet average daily intake requirements for magnesium, which are 300 milligrams (mg) to 420 mg daily for adults. In addition, many people have a magnesium deficiency due to stress… genetics… or a medication, such as a diuretic (usually taken to control blood pressure). As a consequence, these people face an increased risk for health problems. Maintaining adequate levels of magnesium can help reduce muscle cramps, stabilize blood sugar, lower the risk for heart disease, ease migraine headaches, strengthen bones and slow the aging process.

Consider one of my patients, Robert, who limped into my clinic. He was suffering from painful leg muscle spasms that woke him at night and plagued him during the day. Muscle spasms often are related to low magnesium. Since magnesium relaxes muscles, I started Robert on an intravenous (IV) drip of magnesium sulfate. Within an hour, the pain in his leg eased. I had Robert begin taking a daily magnesium supplement, which helped to reduce subsequent leg muscle spasms.

Magnesium is so important that it is sometimes hyped as a miracle cure. Truth: Boosting magnesium levels can lead to recoveries that seem almost miraculous. Here’s how magnesium could help you…

Muscle strength. In addition to cramp relief, magnesium has many other muscle-related benefits. The reason that people often say that they feel an increase in energy after starting to take magnesium supplements is that the mineral is involved in the body’s production of energy, most of which occurs in muscle cells. In a study conducted at the University of Palermo, Italy, researchers found that seniors with the highest levels of magnesium had the greatest muscle strength, including better grip strength, lower leg muscle power, knee-extension torque and ankle strength. People with low magnesium levels had poor muscle function and strength.

Bone health. Almost two-thirds of the body’s magnesium is found in bone, where it works with calcium to provide structural support. Researchers at Yale University gave girls ages eight to 14 either magnesium or a placebo twice daily for one year. Result: The girls who took magnesium developed much stronger bones compared with girls who took a placebo.

Stress buster. Many people manifest stress physically by tensing the muscles of their back and shoulders, leading to tightness. Because magnesium is such a good muscle relaxant, it often can help ease muscle tension. Magnesium also stimulates the body’s production of the calming brain chemical gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), so it also helps people to mentally relax.

Heart benefits. Magnesium helps relax blood vessel walls, which reduces blood pressure. Magnesium sulfate is sometimes administered intravenously in the hospital to reduce the risk for arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). It also eases heart palpitations. Magnesium can help other heart problems, such as cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart fails to pump blood adequately. There’s more: Doctors at Harvard Medical School report that high levels of magnesium were associated with a significantly lower risk for sudden cardiac death, which causes about half of all deaths from coronary artery disease. The study found that people with the highest blood levels of magnesium were 77% less likely to suffer sudden death from cardiac arrest.

Diabetes. Magnesium deficiency is common among people with type 2 diabetes. Earlier this year, German researchers conducted a study in which they gave magnesium supplements to overweight, prediabetic men and women. Those taking magnesium had a significant reduction in fasting blood sugar, better insulin resistance and lower blood pressure compared with those given a placebo.

Neuropathic pain. Soaking in a bath with Epsom salts, which are granules of magnesium sulfate, is a well-known way to ease aches and pains. But I believe that magnesium’s role in relieving severe pain has been barely tapped. In one study, British doctors used intravenous (IV) magnesium to treat people with postherpetic neuralgia, intense pain after a shingles (herpes zoster) outbreak. Pain was significantly reduced after just 30 minutes of receiving magnesium. Another study found that a onetime IV dose of 500 mg to 1,000 mg of magnesium sulfate eliminated nerve pain related to metastases in cancer patients. In my own practice, I find that a combination of IV and oral magnesium eases nerve pain.

Asthma. Magnesium can block the bronchial reactivity common in asthma attacks. In one study, doctors from Brazil reported that supplements of magnesium glycinate decreased bronchial reactivity by 30%. When taken in supplement form, magnesium glycinate is a well-absorbed and well-tolerated type of magnesium. In the study, subjects became more resistant to common asthmatic triggers (such as cold air and allergens) and were able to reduce their asthma medication by almost 40%. I have found similar results with my patients.

Headaches. Several studies have shown that supplementing with magnesium can reduce the frequency of migraine headaches. IV magnesium sulfate also has been found to relieve the pain of cluster headaches in people with low blood levels of magnesium. Research has found that magnesium levels affect serotonin receptors and other brain chemicals that affect headaches.

Antiaging. Magnesium also might help keep you younger. Studies show that magnesium is required to maintain telomeres, the protective tips of chromosomes (which are made up of genes). Researchers have found that magnesium-deficient cells have an abnormal shortening of their telomeres, which is strongly associated with rapid aging.

      MY ADVICE

Many foods contain magnesium, although most people don’t get enough magnesium from their diet. Foods rich in magnesium include green vegetables, such as spinach and dark-leaf lettuce. The green color of vegetables comes from chlorophyll, which contains magnesium. Other excellent sources of magnesium are halibut, almonds, cashews, whole grains, pumpkin seeds and lentils.

I recommend that my patients have their magnesium levels checked. This can be done with a red blood cell magnesium test, which is not part of a regular blood test so you will have to ask for it.

Based on the results of this test, I find that most patients do need to supplement with magnesium. I usually recommend that these adults (both men and women) eat foods high in magnesium and take 200 mg of magnesium glycinate two or three times a day. Most multivitamins don’t contain that amount, but many calcium-magnesium formulas do.

Magnesium of any kind can have a laxative effect if you take too much. If you have kidney problems, speak with your doctor before taking magnesium because the mineral could exacerbate kidney disease.
