A few hours ago I visited a patient who has advanced lung cancer with uncontrolled cancer cell growth in the tissues of the lungs. Such growth leads to metastasis, meaning the invasion of adjacent tissues and infiltration beyond the lungs.

Lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer-related death in men and women, is responsible for over 5.5 million deaths a year.

It is attributable to active tobacco use. The cancer in the patient I visited was technically classified as a small-cell lung carcinoma, a type of cancer that usually responds better to chemotherapy and radiation.

Having spread out of the lungs into his lymph nodes and other areas, oncologists advised this patient that there is no point in taking any treatment as his is a day to day case with no guarantee whatsoever that he would survive for even three months.

Having a positive attitude he managed to register himself with experimental chemotherapy through which they test new, previously not normally used drugs, on human beings whose case has advanced extensively and cannot be treated by normal drugs.

The experimental drug chemotherapy has so far worked for him. His infection in the lungs has been reduced by 50 per cent and he even put on a few pounds over
the last few weeks.

While I had planned a 30 minute visit knowing that he would not be able to talk much, I was with him for at least two hours because he felt energized and wanted to talk.

Being a prominent businessman, he related to me some intelligent aspects of global business and advised me that he had begun to work once again.

He said he accepted the reality of death considering the extent of his disease and with a smile said, be it sick or not, we all are going to die at one time.
His regret was that he did not quit smoking, the cause of his cancer through long-term exposure to tobacco smoke.

He said that when he endured strenuous suffering while going through treatment, he only blamed himself.

However, he felt that he could have saved his family members a lot of anxiety and worry had he not smoked or had he quit smoking before the disease got hold of him.

He said that smokers should be reminded that precaution is better than cure and should quit smoking with the understanding that every puff inhaled has the potential to kill them and their family members through secondary poisoning. He asked smokers to stop smoking, even at home.

Last November, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that around one in hundred deaths worldwide are due to passive smoking.

WHO researchers looked at data from 192 countries for their study. Their report stated that children’s exposure to second-hand smoke mostly happens at home where smoking parents take their children for granted.

Cigarettes are said to contain more than 4000 chemical compounds and at least 400 toxic substances. When one inhales, a cigarette burns at 700°C at the tip and around 60°C in the core. This heat breaks down the tobacco to produce various toxins.

As a cigarette burns, the residues are concentrated towards the butt. The residues include tar, a carcinogen (substance causing cancer), nicotine, which is addictive and increases cholesterol levels in your body, carbon monoxide, which reduces oxygen in the body as well as components of gas and particulate phases which can cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.
