Teenage Smoking is one of the most talked about social problems today. It starts off as an adventure and burns out the lives of so many youngsters. Research says that more than three quarters of adult smokers tried their first puff as teenagers.

Teenage is a phase of stress and turmoil. It is a time to explore into one’s own identity.
It has been scientifically proven that the teenage mind is different from the adult mind. The centre of emotion in the brain, the ‘limbic system’, is highly developed in adolescence, but the tool to control it is not. As a result of which teenagers are more prone to nervous breakdowns and impulsive behaviour. Teenage Smoking thus acts as an outlet to vent these emotions and depressions.

Some start off for the thrill of it, emulating their seniors at school or even their parents. The ones who smoke are mostly the ones who do not perform well at school and thus are isolated by the others. So smoking helps in pulling up their self esteem, it makes them feel more important. It sometimes becomes a style statement or even a power statement. School bullies and the ‘tough’ guys top the list of teenage smokers.

Tobacco use ranks first in the list of causes of preventable deaths. It is almost needless to mention the harmful effects of Nicotine that tobacco contains. It alters the biological system in such a way that a certain minimum level of nicotine becomes necessary to maintain an emotional and psychological balance. It is also proven beyond doubt that smokers are highly vulnerable to diseases like cancer, respiratory problems and even reproductive problems.

A little care taken at home and school can be very effective in reducing teenage smoking. Emotionally supporting them and making them feel needed is the first step. Making them understand the harmful effects of smoking on their bodies should be the next. Sometimes the very feeling of triumph they derive from going against their parent’s wishes can itself be addictive. Giving them that little attention they crave for might save them from puffing all their lives.

The governments are also working towards solving this issue that is of great social concern. Owing to this, cigarettes have become more expensive. This has also reduced the number of young puffers. The society has opened its eyes to this problem and many organizations have come forward to help. Many camps and talks have also been organized to make teenagers and their parents more aware of the situation.

It is however heartening to see that there are many teenagers who are participating in anti-smoking campaigns. The idea that teenage smoking is ‘cool’ has started withering away in the minds of these young ones. This is in fact a positive sign. The argument that teenage smoking is mostly induced by peer pressure is starting to become baseless. Many youngsters are taking an effort to talk to their friends and siblings to help them out of this addiction.
No tags for this post.

Today I just have a simple question for you and a few suggestions from my personal experiences. I want to find out what the number one excuse is that keeps you from quitting smoking?

Ask yourself this question:

Why have I not quit smoking until now?

Im expecting an answer that goes something like this:

I have not quit smoking until now because, every time I quit, I go back home and see my spouse smoking, or at work my colleagues invite me for a smoke break even when they know I am trying to quit so I break down and can’t resist the temptation.

Or even

I still have not quit even though I know its bad, because I have never ever tried to quit.

Answers like the ones below are really not answers:

1. I am addicted or I am an addict is not an answer, all smokers are hooked on the stuff thats why they struggle to quit (duh)!!!

2. I start craving for them, trust me I craved and felt like crying at times watching the person next to me smoke and just knowing I cant smoke.

The whole purpose of this is to find the weak spot that gets you to go back, hopefully we can go from there to find something to aid you quit. I sincerely want to help you find that answer to help you quit smoking.

I intend to create an application of some sorts that can help you overcome this weakness, so I am looking for a little data to work on. Your help will be appreciated.

Advice from an ex smoker

Just a few words from an ex-smoker to end this post, I did it and so many others have, so there really is no reason why you cant.

I honestly believe hypnosis can help, clinical tests even prove this to be true see this link (Hypnosis increases your chances of quitting by 66%).

This is why I have included a quit smoking hypnosis audio program under the free quit smoking aids section. I actually used this myself and let me share with you why I know this works.

I listened to it a couple of times and then tried quitting. Every time I found myself in a situation where I was craving I would take a deep breath and exhale by blowing the steam out slowly. This is behavior I have never done before, I suspected the hypnosis may have worked and listened to it without falling asleep or relaxing as you are told.

I wanted to listen to what suggestions were being made, turns out that one of the suggestions was to take a deep breath and blow it out slowly every time you find yourself in a situation where you feel vulnerable. It didn’t take away the craving but it made it that much more bearable so I managed to stay quit long enough to have quit for good.

I was amazed it worked, of course you got to listen to it at least once a day for 30 days, especially if you are the skeptical type. I did 2 sessions daily for 2 weeks to see these results.

There really is no reason to burn your pockets on any quit smoking products to quit, a combination of hypnosis with a little will to end the habit of smoking from your side is all you really need.

Good luck and remember you only fail when you give up….don’t give up on quitting!

As a non-smoker (or an
ex-smoker, depending on your situation), you probably find the entire concept of
smoking distasteful. That is, after all, why you may be seeking to help a smoker
quit their habit for good. To you, the reasons are obvious; smoking is not only
bad for a smokers’ health and appearance, but it has financial repercussions,
too. It should seem like an argument you’ll win easily, especially when
statistics about how half of smokers want to quit are bandied around. It looks
like an argument you, and a few well-learned truths about smoking, are destined
to win.

However, what you must understand if you are trying to
convince someone to quit smoking is this: smokers like smoking! That might sound
like a ridiculous statement, but it’s something many people who try and
convince a smoker to quit absolutely forget. A smoker may wish they had never
started the habit and may want to quit, but in essence they enjoy the experience
of smoking; and that’s why they do it. They probably know the downsides
already, and have still chosen to smoke.

It’s important you
don’t underestimate how much people can enjoy smoking, and particularly the
social aspect of it. When you are presenting your case, don’t ever be harsh to
a smoker, or try and shout at them in an attempt to make them quit the habit.
Instead, acknowledge this is something they enjoy – even if you can’t see the
benefits – and take a softer, more understanding approach. Using a gentler
method of convincing, you are far more likely to succeed.

The mental effort that it
takes to give up smoking is well-known. It is certainly increased by keeping
links to your recent status as a smoker – so giving up will take a little bit of
a change in mentality. If, for example, you keep ashtrays lying around – even
clean, unused ones which can be used by visitors – then you will be more
compelled to smoke.

A lot depends on how much you used to smoke.
If smoking was a major part of your life before – you used cigarettes to enhance
your enjoyment of music, socializing or similar – then breaking the bond that it
has over you is going to be all the more problematic. You may find that
listening to the same albums and going to the same bars or clubs becomes a major
temptation, even if you cannot smoke indoors in those clubs.

The
psychological compulsion to smoke is probably the hardest part to get past. So
keeping lighters and ashtrays around, or reading books about central characters
who like to smoke pretty much incessantly is going to make giving up a lot
harder. It is best to keep reminders to a minimum. This is not to say you should
shun your best friend if they still smoke, but it might be a good idea to
request of them that they keep their smoking to a minimum when they are around
you. In the end you can’t close yourself off from all reminders, but limiting
them will help.

We all know about the
positive aspects of giving up smoking, and for the most part we know about the
difficult side too. If you really want to break the hold that cigarettes have
over you, you need to be ready to deal with the bad stuff. Paradoxically,
though, you will do yourself no favors by considering the bad stuff ahead of the
good. So how do you deal with the negative side while not turning it into a
dominating issue?

The truth of the matter is that the bad side
will be there whether or not you focus on it. The best way of dealing with it is
to push it as far into the background as you possibly can. While it may seem
like naivete to ignore the bad aspects, the truth is that you are not really
doing anything harmful – you are accentuating the positive and preventing the
negative side from becoming all-consuming. By focusing on the positive you can
deal with the negative by diminishing it to the point where it ceases to be a
factor.

When you break your leg, it gets put in a plaster cast
so that there is no pressure placed on the healing bones. Your positive mental
attitude can be the plaster cast that prevents you from racing back to the
cigarettes and unravelling all of your good work. It’s not infallible – nothing
is – but it is much better to back your own willpower and succeed than spend
hundreds of dollars finding out what works.

One of the continuing
failings of humanity is that we can be appallingly cruel to one another. When
you announce that you are giving up smoking, you may expect people to be
supportive, but it is not uncommon to find that someone will utter the dreaded
words: “I’ll bet you [unspecified amount of money] that you don’t make it
through a week without cracking.”. If this is the case, then your best option is
to take that bet. If you know you can do it, then there is no harm in making a
little bit of money into the bargain.

What you need to avoid
though is taking the bet and then once you have got through the specified time
barrier starting to smoke again. This is tempting, of course. It’s easy to
think “I’ll have the money and then start smoking again”, so it is worth
including a stipulation that you will pay the money back if you give up giving
up. All of this may sound a little bit cynical, but if you are keen to give up
yet assailed by temptation, adding an extra layer to your defenses is no bad
idea.

People’s cynicism is a tough hurdle to overcome after
deciding that you will give up smoking. Proving them wrong is not just a matter
of you being right and them being stupid. In fact, if you can show them that you
have inner strength, you will also prove a point to yourself. This can be worth
a lot in future.

.

The electronic cigarette is a device that is inhaled to provide nicotine as a vaporized solution. It is sometimes called a personal vaporizer. This alternative to actually smoking a cigarette is a relatively new development that is gaining in popularity. The nicotine is inhaled and when you blow out, the vapor provides a flavor and sensation similar to inhaling tobacco smoke, however, no tobacco or smoke is involved in the use of an electronic cigarette.

There are different styles on the market today, but most actually look like a cigarette, with the end becoming red as if it were actually lit, giving you more of the feeling of an actual cigarette. Another common design is the “pen-style,” so named because it looks like a ballpoint pen. Whatever the style, the basic components of an electronic cigarette are the cartridge, the atomizer and the battery.

The cartridge, or mouthpiece, contains an absorbent material moistened with a flavored nicotine solution. Cartridges come in regular nicotine flavor in various degrees of strength and menthol. Some companies also have coffee flavored, chocolate, mint, orange – just about any flavor. Others try to mimic brand names, like Marlboro. Then there are companies who have solutions with little or no nicotine at all and these are the ones people are using as an aid to stop smoking. This nicotine solution is generally nicotine diluted in propylene glycol, a common food additive. Cartridges are usually purchased in a five-pack, and each cartridge is equal to approximately one to one and a half packs of cigarettes. You can also purchase small vials of the flavored liquid nicotine and refill cartridges yourself.

The atomizer, or heating element, vaporizes the liquid in the cartridge so that it can be inhaled. Some models include the atomizer in the cartridge so that you get a new atomizer each time you replace the cartridge. These are called cartomizers.

The long end of the electronic cigarette is the battery, a lithium-ion rechargeable battery. This powers the heating element. Usually one purchases a “starter kit” which includes a battery charger. There are several different battery chargers available, including wall outlet, car charger and USB charger. Most electronic cigarettes have a sensor that activates upon inhalation, but others have a manual button the user has to press while inhaling.

E-Cigarettes are the smoothest way to “stop smoking” – in fact you will continue to enjoy the pleasure of a smoke while avoiding all the negative side effect, since electronic cigarettes are:
Safer: The proponents of electronic cigarettes feel this product is very safe because this nicotine contains no harmful chemicals or carcinogens.

When you announce that
you have decided to give up cigarettes, the response of friends and family is
important in deciding how successful your bid for freedom will be. If they react
by gathering around and giving you praise and support for your decision, then
you stand a great chance of keeping to the good road. If they show concern,
saying “Are you sure? You know how hard that’s going to be?”, it’s not the
best start to your bid.

The key is to look at your cessation as
a positive thing. You know already that it is not going to be easy, but there is
a range of positive aspects to giving up smoking. The most positive of all is
the simple fact of breaking an addiction. There are no words to describe how
much more free you feel after getting the better of your cravings, and it is
this freedom and the joy that it brings that are the real prizes for anyone who
manages to dislodge the monkey from their back.

Don’t
concentrate on the fact that it is going to be difficult. Accept that this is a
given, and instead concentrate on the fact that you can do this. It is more
important to concentrate on what you are capable of than to focus on the
possible problems. In doing that, you create a bigger hurdle in your mind, and
the power of positive thinking has been proven. You can’t build a castle by
thinking that you can, but you can certainly get more done than if you
concentrate on how hard it will be.
